She shakes her head against my chest. “He was worse, Colton. At least Wes is a boy. In my father’s eyes, that gives him some value. You said he wanted something. Did he ask you for money?”
“Not exactly. But I have one guess as to who put him up to this. And Ash will end it, or I’ll do it myself.”
Winnie lifts her gaze to mine, and I kiss her forehead. “Thank you, CC.”
“Thank you? For what?” Her raised eyebrows furrow in confusion.
“For being here. For trusting me. For keeping me from doing something stupid. Until I had you by my side, I felt out of control. I’m not sure what I would have done to your father if I didn’t have you to come home to.”
Her eyes glisten, even as they droop with exhaustion. “It’s new for me, too, Colton. Loving someone so much, it’s a little scary.”
I watch as she slowly blinks a few times until her eyes finally stay closed. I sit here, holding her to me while she naps. “Yeah, sweetheart. Loving someone is scary. But not as scary as losing them.”
She doesn’t flinch as I scoot us up the bed so I can rest against the headboard.
Winnie quietly snores while I grab my phone and set the wheels in motion for our future.
Colton: Update?
Preston: Emergency hearing Wednesday morning at 8 a.m.
Preston: He took a swing at me and is in custody.
Easton: What did you do to instigate that?
Preston: I put some pressure on him to talk.
Colton: Did he?
My phone rings in my hand. Glancing down, I see it’s Ashton, so I carefully lay Winnie down, and slip out of bed. In the hallway, I answer. “Ash.”
“Colt. Darling had three large deposits into his account in the last month.”
“From who?”
“I’m working on it.”
“Ashton, if this is Macomb …”
“If it’s him, I’ll take care of it.”
“You keep saying that, and I keep getting hurt.”
“I’ll take care of it. I have to go, but is Wes okay?”
I sigh heavily into the phone. “Yeah. He’s with Lexi and East right now.”
“Good. I’ll be in touch.”
“Thanks, Ash.”
I glance down at my phone, but he’s already disconnected. I want to throw it against the wall because something about this just doesn’t feel right. Instead, I grab a pair of lounge pants and head down to my office.
Behind the large, industrial desk that I didn’t choose, I scroll my phone for the group chat I need. When I find it, I smile. If they can’t get this done, no one can.

Colton: How fast can you put together a wedding?
