Shay nods, carefully pulling off Ana’s shirt and pants, leaving her in her underwear as she lifts the comforter over her body and tucks her hair away from her face. I stand watching, knowing I should go, but the overwhelming need to ensure she’s okay, when I know Shay is more than capable of looking after her, keeps my feet rooted to the spot.

Ana sighs in her sleep, and Shay grabs a pack of wet wipes and starts to clean her face. The floorboards must creak or something because Shay glances over her shoulder, clearly surprised I’m still here.

“I’ve got this, Teddy. You can go. She’ll be fine.”

I nod and brush my hand through my hair, awkwardly leaving the girls alone.

“Teddy?”

I turn back, and Shay looks between Ana and me. “Thanks.”

I nod again like one of those bobbleheads, with a voice echoing inside my head repeatedly saying, “Mom will ruin his family.”

Chapter Thirty-Nine

Morgana

Why does it feel like someone’s bashing my head with a hammer?

Groaning, I roll over and squint through the bright light streaming through the open curtains. Why did no one close the damn things when we got home?

Wait. How did we get home?

“Good morning, buttercup.”

Slowly, I turn my head to the other side of my bed. Shay’s leaning against her elbow, wearing the smuggest grin I’ve ever seen and looking far too fresh for how much we drank last night.

“Why do I feel like death and you don’t?”

“Water, babe,” she says, like it’s the most obvious explanation. “Water in between each round.”

“Why didn’t you give me any?”

“I tried. A whole pitcher was on the table, and you didn’t have any of it.”

I groan, planting my face into my pillow. “How did we get home last night?”

“What was the last thing you remember?” she asks, and my hangover kicks up a notch. No one asks what the last thing you remember is unless you have done something really bad.

“Erm, I remember drinking that green shot and you getting some guy’s number, but that’s about it.”

“Oh boy.”

“Oh boy? Why ‘oh boy’?” I sit up too fast, the room spinning around me.

“You disappeared for like ten minutes to go to the bathroom, so I went to find you.”

“Did I fall asleep again?” I ask, knowing too well that during college, drinking with Shay usually meant a catnap in the bathroom stall for me.

“Not exactly,” she grimaces. “When I came in, Teddy was there, and it looked like you’d been crying, and I think you threw up.”

I cover my face with my hands. “He was in the bathroom with me? Did he see that?”

She makes a non-committal noise like it’s highly likely he did. “Then you sort of passed out, and Teddy brought us home.”

That’s when I realize I’m sitting in my bra and panties. “Shay, who undressed me?”

She stretches through a yawn. “Don’t worry, that was me.”
