The chat around the table moves on from teasing Teddy as Ozzy tells us about a new restaurant Shay dragged him to. They are becoming fast friends, and I can’t stop my smile as I look at our unlikely group sitting around the small table. Teddy and I have been in our own little bubble for days now, rediscovering each other before work, after work, in the middle of the night… and I couldn’t be happier. That was, until Shay and Ozzy barged into Teddy’s apartment tonight and demanded we spend time with them too. Hence the dinner party.
Richard had also texted me the day after he left, telling me he had spoken to our parents, and while I thought Mom wouldn’t be happy, I had expected to hear from her by now. The fact that it’s been five days and there’s been nothing but radio silence, I’m on edge, jumping every time my phone rings in case it’s her.
“Are we still on for going to The Dirty Duck tonight?” Shay asks, pushing her empty bowl away and tapping her stomach.
“Nah, not me. I’ve got plans,” Ozzy says.
“Hot date?” Teddy asks, and Ozzy shakes his head.
“Uncle duties.”
I’ve not met little Sierra yet, but from what Teddy’s said, she’s the cutest little hellion he’s ever known.
“Ana? Teddy?” Shay asks hopefully.
Teddy looks to me, and I nod. “Yeah, sounds good. I have to run back to the apartment and get changed. I need to get out of these office clothes.”
“I can help you out of your office clothes,” Teddy says suggestively, leaning over and kissing me long and hard. I inhale, the smell of engines permeating my lungs.
“Nope, no, c’mon, Morgs. Let’s go before you two end up fucking on the table or something and never leave.”
“That’s not a half-bad idea.” Teddy pumps his brows.
Shay scowls and points her finger at him. “Down, boy!”
Teddy’s phone chimes in his pocket, and he reads the text with a frown, then immediately smiles.
“I’ve gotta do something real quick before going to the bar. I’ll meet you two at your apartment?” he asks, and I tilt my head in question. “It’s a surprise, baby. But I know you’ll like it.”
He stands and gives me a quick kiss as he and Ozzy start cleaning the table. I hug Ozzy goodbye, and then Shay and I drive over to the rental apartment so I can get changed.
“You know I do not want you to leave, right? But Teddy did have a point. How long are you staying for?” I ask Shay as we step into the apartment.
“Not sure yet,” she hums thoughtfully as she lifts her shirt over her head and walks away in just her bra.
“What are you doing?”
“Getting changed. I can’t go out looking like this if I’m going to score tonight.” She rummages in her suitcase splayed out in the corner of the bedroom, and pulls out something silky.
“What about Lenox?” I ask again, remembering she didn’t answer my question that night in the bar when she was flirting with the bartender.
She sighs and throws over a top that I can only assume she wants me to wear. “That sort of fizzled out.”
“What? When?”
“A few days before you called to tell me about you and Teddy.” She shoves her top over her head and pulls it down to cover her stomach, which is about all it covers. The low V-neck showcases her cleavage, and she shoves her hands into her bra, rearranging her boobs to make them sit even higher. “And before you say anything, I didn’t tell you because you had all that shit going on with Richard, and then I forgot. But I’m fine. It wasn’t serious anyway, so I’m moving on.”
I watch her apply lipstick in the mirror and decide she’s telling the truth. She really doesn’t care that they didn’t work out.
“Anyway, what about you?” she asks, pouting at herself in the mirror.
“What about me?”
“You’ve only got just over two months left of being here. What you going to do when the times up and you need to head back to Connecticut?”
I nibble on my bottom lip. “If Teddy asks me to stay, I’ll stay.”
“Really?” she gasps. “Oh shit.”
