I try to shrug out of her hold, but her fingers bite into my skin. “Ouch, Shay, what are you doing?”
“Believe me, you don’t want to see what I see.”
“I’m a big girl. I’m sure I can keep it in my pants.”I think.
But it’s not my pants that are the issue. Standing at the bar is Teddy and the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. Tall, curves in all the right places, long, flowing auburn hair that cascades down her back and brushes along his arm where he’s curled it around her waist. My chest twinges, and my stomach bottoms out. I have no right to feel like this; I told him nothing was going to happen between us, and even though rationally I know that I can’t, the sense of betrayal barrels into me hard as I struggle to peel my eyes from them.
His date says something, all smiles and wide eyes as she tilts up toward him. The mix of tequila, wine, and the other spirits that kept coming all night sours in my stomach, leaving a sickly taste in the back of my throat. Teddy grins and ducks down, brushing her hair away from her neck and leaning into it as the woman’s eyes flutter closed.
I slam mine shut, blocking the view of Teddy, and steeling myself for a second before turning back to Shay.
“We need more drinks.”
Chapter Thirty-Eight
Teddy
She’s drunk.
Like messy, no inhibitions, can’t string a sentence together drunk, and if it were anyone else, I would find it amusing. Not only is she distracting me from mydatewith Savanna, but she and Shay are also putting themselves in a situation neither girl should be in, in a town they don’t know. I’m not saying people around here are sleazy, but the number of guys who’ve approached their table with that gleam in their eyes we all get when we’re out on the prowl, does not sit right with me.
“You’re not listening to me. Are you?”
“Huh?”
Savanna huffs, but she gives me a knowing smile and places her elbow on the table, resting her chin on the back of her hand. “I know I’m a sure thing, but a girl still likes some effort, Teddy. You’ve been staring at those two drunk girls the whole time I was speaking.” She purses her lips and swivels on her seat, glancing over to watch Shay howling with laughter and Morgana’s face turning the prettiest shade of red.
No. Not pretty. Just red.
“Do you know them or something?”
I scrub a hand over my jaw. “Nah.”
“But you did? I can tell,” she probes, pumping her eyebrows and leaning closer. “So, who is she? Client? Fuck buddy? The one that got away?”
Her eyes narrow in on the last one like she’s hoping she hit the jackpot, which she obviously has, but I’m not admitting that to anyone.
“She’s no one important,” I say, reaching over and running my hand up her bare arm to her neck, wrapping my fingers around her nape and bringing her closer to whisper in her ear. “She’s not the one I’m going home with and fucking to within an inch of her life.”
She pushes my chest and laughs. “Oh no, Prince Charming.”I detest that name.“We aren’t having sex tonight.”
“You just said you’re a sure thing,” I tease.
“Nu-huh. Not when you have this kicked puppy look going on each time you look over at her.” Savanna’s finger waves around my face. I drop my hold from her neck and lean back.
“I don’t have…”
“Yes, you do,” she says, sipping her red wine. “Besides, Ozzy warned me you might beabsenttonight.”
“You talk to Ozzy?”
“Yes, Teddy,” she says pointedly. “We’re friends too, and sometimes we even talk.” She gasps like it’s a huge shock.
“And the topic of conversation is me?”
She pats my hand. “Oh, sweetie, don’t be so full of yourself. We talk about a lot of things, but you happened to be mentioned, and he told me you might not be the best company since you’ve been acting all sourly for the past week.”
Her brows tug together, giving her this look that can’t be… pity?
