If she walked away, then that would mean we weren’t as compatible as I thought.
Kylie: Almost. I need to pick up the second one. But I plan to read something in between.
Me: Don’t get it. I’ve got a copy in my hand for you. What else do you read? I’m in one of my favorite bookstores, and I’d be happy to pick something out for you.
There was a brief delay before Kylie responded.
Kylie: Romance. Spicy, unrealistic, and fun. Currently on the hunt for one with an age gap.
Now we were getting somewhere. I smiled as I moved into the romance section, reading the backs of several books before settling on one with an age gap and praise kink. Perfect.
Me: I found one. I think it will be perfect for you.
Kylie: Who is pitching tonight?
Me: Cannon.
Andy Cannon was a solid starter who, on any other team, would have been considered the ace pitcher. While he could have felt dwarfed by the presence of Sam Drummond on the roster, he had taken it upon himself to learn as much as he could from him and the rest of the coaching staff. Working with young athletes who had only ever been told how great they were, we dealt with some big heads and more than a few stubborn attitudes. But not Andy.
Kylie: Is this where I ask you to tell me what Sam is like and you refuse?
Me: Only if that’s a question and not a statement.
Kylie: Would you tell me if I needed to worry about my sister with Sam?
I did have a line; I had told my players I would never lie for them. These guys spent more time on the road than was healthy for marriages and relationships. Some guys cheated for the power of it, and some guys cheated because they were lonely. But while Sam never had public relationships with women, he didn’t strike me as a guy who wouldn’t be respectful in a relationship. He was more likely to stay single than to fail at a commitment.
Me: Sam’s a good guy.
Kylie: Ok.
Thankfully, she left it there because I understood her need to watch out for her little sister and nephew, and I would hate for them to get hurt.
CHAPTER 7
KYLIE
Lily and I agreed to meet at her apartment. We scheduled it for the end of work. The more I thought about it, the more I hoped it would also be my apartment soon.
When I told my parents, they barely hid their disappointment. I swore they would be happy if we all moved home and lived there forever. Shit, they’d buy a family compound if they could afford one.
Me to Sister Chat: Someone better move back home.
Kendra: Not it.
Kelsey: Ugh, I hope I don’t need to move back in.
Me: Girl, they won’t charge rent.
Kelsey: I want my independence.
Ugh. Kelsey would purposely choose the most difficult path to avoid taking an ounce of help from anyone else.
I followed the address to a gorgeous brownstone in Back Bay. Damn, Lily. No wonder you need a roommate now that Daddy isn’t paying the bill.
And then I hated myself for those thoughts. Despite receiving everything she’d ever needed from her parents, Lily always gave one hundred percent. Even though the apartment cost was at the top of my budget, I knew Lily was heavily subsidizing it, so I could afford it.
Kendra: Have you seen the apartment yet?
