He finished making our coffee just as the bagels popped up in the toaster. I served the eggs and bacon as he spread cream cheese on the bagels.
When we eventually sat down to eat, Liam decided to show his face.
“Is he looking for scraps?” I asked.
“No, he’s not a fan of anything on our plates, but he’s a sucker for tortilla chips.”
“He eats chips?”
“He’s not supposed to, but he’ll swipe them right out of your hand.”
I looked Liam dead in the eye. “Don’t try me, guy; I’ll fight you for my chips.”
Liam gave me a dismissive stare as he chirped in response. Yep, that cat would do whatever the fuck he wanted, and I loved him for it.
CHAPTER 18
LUC
Kylie’s new apartment was within walking distance of my place, and it was reassuring to see that it was not only in a safe neighborhood but one of the better Boston locations. I knew her salary was likely entry-level for a public servant, and I suspected her new roommate was heavily subsidizing the rent.
When I pulled up in front of the classic brownstone entrance, her hand immediately reached for the door handle.
“Hey,” I said.
“Yeah?”
“Good luck with the move. I wish I could help today.”
Kylie looked and turned to meet my eyes. “If you saw how few belongings I have, you’d recognize that this is not going to be a tough move. Lily and I will be drinking and celebrating by late afternoon.”
“Can I text you when the game is over?”
“Of course.”
She smiled at me, and I wanted to do anything to prolong the morning with her.
“Can I bring you a housewarming gift?”
“What are you asking for, Luc? A booty call?”
“I guess I’m just not ready for this date to end, and I would like to see you later tonight if that’s okay?”
Kylie leaned in, cupped my cheek, and softly kissed my lips. “I would like to see you too. Let me know when you’re on the way, okay?”
I nodded and watched her get out of my car and head up the steps.
CHAPTER 19
KYLIE
Lily welcomed me home with open arms and had already ordered lunch as a celebration. She took one look at me in Luc’s shorts and T-shirt and shook her head.
“Good thing you didn’t stop in at your parents’ house. Come on, let’s get some clothes that fit you.”
“Hey, at least I showered.”
“Hopefully with him—I saw him, Ky. Sorry, but I had to peek. That man is fine.”
