“You don’t have to give up coaching to make me believe you’re serious. If your career is important to you, we can figure out how to make everything work, Luc. I don’t see myself as a stay-at-home mom, and I think what I do makes a difference. It’s why I chose the field.”

“I think I may be outgrowing the lifestyle. I’m not looking forward to our road series for the first time in over ten years.”

The more I thought about being an at-home father, the more I liked the idea. Fuck, Icouldafford it. If losing my father when I did could offer anything good, the trust fund he left me could provide an opportunity to be with my children.

“You need to finish out the season?”

“I do. And I recognize it’s not ideal with your due date. The last game of the season is on September 29th. If we make it to the post-season?—”

“I’ll be okay. We will figure it out. You won’t miss the birth?”

“No, I won’t allow that. I’m not the only coach, and the MLB has paternity leave in the player contracts. The organization allows the same leave to coaches and managers. It’s only three days, though. How about your leave?”

Kylie smiled. “I can take up to a year. It’s unpaid, but my medical coverage and my job are protected up to a year from when the baby is born.”

Liam had had enough of hanging out on the couch and seemed comfortable enough that Kylie was staying. He went to the cabinet and yelled for his supper.

“Let me go take care of him.”

CHAPTER 53

KYLIE

As important as these conversations were, I hadn’t come here to tell Luc no at every turn. On the way over here, I had felt so full of hope.

I watched as Liam devoured his dinner and helped myself to a glass of water. Luc’s mood had gone from hopeful to almost somber. None of that was my goal.

“Hey,” I said as he rinsed the cat food can in the sink, his back to me.

“What?”

His eyes searched mine. Oh man. Desire pooled in my core. I had missed this man.

“I was thinking that we don’t need condoms anymore.”

The can clattered in the sink, and Luc covered the distance between us in less than two steps. My back hit the counter with a thud. He’d gone feral.

His mouth was on mine, and he lifted me onto the counter as my mouth opened, our tongues battling as we made up for lost time.

“Are you sure?”

“There was no one else for me. How about for you?”

“No one.” Luc’s voice cracked with emotion as he answered.

Relief flooded through me. I needed the answer before we were intimate, but I couldn’t have handled any other answer.

“I’ve had some issues lately.”

“Yeah?”

He watched with hunger as I pulled my shirt up over my head. My B-cup breasts were now overflowing from the D-cup I had bought when I could no longer clasp my old bras.

“Fu-uck, Ky. Where did these come from?”

“They just showed up overnight.”

That was the best explanation, because it was as if they had grown overnight.
