Taking her hand, Memphis pulled her into bed with him. Thayer snuggled up to him, careful not to push against his side. With her head on his shoulder and his arm draped around her, pulling her closer, it didn’t take long before he felt himself drift off.

On the east coast of the country, while Thayer and Memphis slept, Knox tried to follow the thin trail to her abductor. He had no doubt it was someone who knew her, even though his investigation had turned up nothing so far.
Dex had passed on everything they found at the fire, which wasn’t much. The men had been thugs with impressive firepower that traced to no one. The mystery person had been smart enough to pay them with cash, probably through a common postal drop. Dex had promised to continue working that side of the case, but Knox wasn’t holding his breath that anything would turn up.
Knox thumped the desk in frustration. There had to be something he kept overlooking, he just couldn’t understand what it was. So far, he had called in every favor he had in the search, only to turn up nothing.
He had combed through Senator Kent’s life a dozen times, at least. If there had been any questions about the man’s honesty before, there certainly wasn’t now. His financial records were so clean they actually squeaked. There were no infidelities, bribes, special favors or questionable endorsements in his history.
“What am I missing, Murphy?” He stared at Memphis’ dog sleeping in the corner of the senator’s office. It was the question that kept playing on repeat in his mind. Murphy thumped his tail once on the floor, offering little in the way of help. “Really? You have nothing more to add?”
The dog answered with a soft bark that sounded more like a bored snort. Knox shook his head. He had refused to leave Murphy behind at the vet clinic. The dog belonged with Memphis and he was going to make sure he got him back sooner rather than later.
He had never been all that enamored with owning a dog before, but this one was different. When all of this was over, he might have to think about getting one. As if Murphy could read his thoughts, the dog got up to wander over to Knox, nuzzling his hand to be petted. Knox sighed, rising to his feet.
“I guess we’d better go if we’re going to make it tomorrow. I just wish I could figure out what I’m missing.” Knox had insisted on adding extra security to the senator’s staff while he was on the campaign trail.
Senator Kent had not been happy when Knox had explained why Thayer was still with Memphis. As a matter of fact, he had taken a pretty good ass reaming from the man.
Details of the firefight at Memphis’s house hadn’t helped either until Knox finally reminded him that Thayer was the reason the mercenaries were there in the first place. He’s pretty sure he saw a small spark of grudging respect for Memphis in the senator’s eyes when he heard about him taking two bullets trying to protect her. Maybe there was hope for Memphis yet, since Knox was pretty sure he was completely taken by Thayer.
“Get in,” Knox said to Murphy when they got to the parking garage. He had had to make a few adjustments to his transportation for the dog, mainly adding a sidecar. Knox had driven a Harley-Davidson since he was sixteen.
His first one had been an old, worn-out piece of crap that he spent more time repairing than riding, but he had loved it. His newest ride he hadn’t had long. It was a stunning Softail Deluxe in midnight blue. The sidecar didn’t really match, but he had been in a hurry trying to find one. He could always have it repainted later.
With a roar, the engine started in one smooth move. Grinning over at the dog, Knox swore he saw the dog grin back at him. They were expected at Reagan National soon for the flight to Tennessee.
He had spoken briefly to Memphis’ foster brother earlier. He had agreed to be at his old foster house tomorrow afternoon. It was time for them to go on the offensive to draw this man out. The sooner they had a plan to do that, the sooner this could all be over.
It was time for him to get back in the classroom. This security detail had taken a toll on him. It was time for them all to get on with life.

Thayer woke up to the sound of soft snoring. Her head lay on a strong arm that wrapped around her, holding her in place. One of his legs was flush up against her but the other one had twined itself around hers, pulling it back. Somehow, Memphis had managed to engulf her without hurting himself.
She loved the feeling of waking up completely surrounded by him. It felt safe. She smiled when he ground himself against her with a moan before resuming his snoring. It appeared that at least something was awake.
Barely suppressing a giggle, she moved slightly, freeing his erection from digging into her hip. Slowly, so she didn’t disturb him, she eased her hand between them, sliding inside his shorts. She closed her hand over his throbbing cock, making him moan again.
“What are you doing?” he growled into her hair. In the past, she was pretty sure she would have frozen before asking herself that very question.
But that was before she met Memphis, now she simply continued her journey back up, circling the head with her thumb. When she heard him hiss out a breath, she gently pulled her hand out, rolling over in his arms. Wrapping his hand in her hair, Memphis pulled her to him in a kiss.
Thayer rolled him flat onto his back as she kissed him. It wasn’t a sweet, gentle good morning kiss, this one attempted to melt the paint from the walls in its intensity. Her hand worked feverishly to push his shorts down as his mouth battled for control of hers, taking his fill.
“Lift your hips,” she moaned when he released her. “Gently.” When he complied, Thayer pulled his shorts off his legs and threw the covers back. Her hand wrapped back around his shaft as she crashed her mouth back down on his. She could hear his breath hitch as she worked her fist down with a twist before running it back up.
“Christ, Thayer,” Memphis growled out. Squeezing harder, Thayer picked up her pace, causing him to push his head back into the pillow. Fearing she had hurt him, she froze, not sure what to do next. “Don’t stop.”
Looking into his face, she saw deep green eyes looking back. With a small smile teasing at the edges of his mouth, he wrapped his hand around hers as she started running her hand down him again. With his hand guiding her, she squeezed even tighter, rubbing harder.
Leaning down, Thayer kissed his jaw, running her tongue down his neck until she stopped at his chest. Nipping a light bite against his skin, she heard him growl. Licking over the bite, she made her way farther until she flicked her tongue over his nipple, drawing a hissed curse from his lips.
She could feel his legs shake and marveled at how she could bring this man to the edge so quickly. Grabbing her hair again with his one mobile hand, he pulled her up to his mouth as she felt him spill over her hand in one last thrust.
Thayer lay on his chest, listening to his heart hammer as he caught his breath. “Holy shit,” he groaned, looking up at the ceiling. With a grin, Thayer leaned up on her elbow so she could see his face.
