“At least we can agree on Jerry Rice over Tom Brady,” Knox conceded, giving the side-eye to Greer.
“Really?Over Jim Brown?Psst, amateurs.”Tyler rolled her eyes at the two across the table.
Having played football through high school, she could argue her case for hours if necessary. As a matter of fact, she had argued her case with Knox her senior year of high school.
“Dex, are you going to weigh in here?”
“Fine.I’m going with Wayne Gretzky, best athlete of all time,” Dex answered, motioning for the waiter as pandemonium broke out at the table.“I’m ready to order, the rest can wing it.”
Knox scrambled to look at his menu, having not been here before.Tyler watched as Greer quickly leaned over to Knox, going over the menu with him.
“Weirdest sexual tension ever,” Dex whispered into her ear after ordering.“After ours anyway.”Tyler couldn’t hide the smile that crossed her lips.
“Hey, pay attention. This isn’t an after-prom party,” Greer said, eyeing them.
“What does that even mean?”Knox asked in exasperation before looking at Dex.“Do you see what I’ve had to put up with all day?”Dex winked at Knox, drawing a scowl in return before turning serious.
“Did you reach Memphis?”Dex asked.
Knox immediately turned sober as he leaned forward.
“Yeah, he said Mia and the others are still in the warehouse. There isn’t any change there, but he said he’ll keep working on that end.How did you make out today?”
“We have a job at the big container terminal starting tomorrow,” Dex began.“I’ve been thinking about it though. If I can get one of the laptops from the FBI office with the software to decode a password, I might be able to hack into their system without breaking into the office. It’s a long shot, but I think it’s worth a try. That way, if we can’t find the chance to steal their passwords, it will give us a backup plan.I’ll just need time to work on it while we’re there.”
Tyler nodded, understanding exactly what she would need to do.
“I can stop at the office to go over the projected cost again.I’ll tell him I just want to make sure we’re all on the same page. You can work in the truck until I return. How much time do I need to buy you?”she asked.
“I’m not sure, I’ll have a better answer after I meet with my contact at the office.I’ll call him tonight after dinner.”
“Okay, just swing by the apartment when you’re done so we can come up with a plan.”Tyler realized that she and Dex had turned in their seats in the booth to face each other like the others weren’t even there.
Looking across the table, she was greeted by stunned silence, all four eyebrows reaching the sky in smirks.Fortunately, she was saved from their judgment by the waiter delivering their food. After refilling their drinks, he left to check on his other tables. The conversation turned to Greer and Knox’s day.
“We hit everywhere, but no one has heard of anything,” Greer started.“Work was a bust, they don’t really talk to the cocktail waitress.I guess I could go back to dancing for a while, see if I can get any information doing lap dances.”
“No, if anyone’s getting a glance at those tits, it’s me,” Knox growled, popping a bite of steak into his mouth.“What?”he asked when Dex and Tyler just stared at him. With a groan, he looked up at the ceiling.“You know what I mean.”
“Damn, Greer. Are you okay?”Tyler had watched her best friend slowly grow so red that she could swear she could give a lobster a run for its money. She couldn’t remember ever seeing Greer embarrassed, come to think of it.
She had been a dancer in New Orleans, where she grew up before escaping to Houston. From hearing the stories that Greer had shared about her time there, Tyler didn’t think anyone could get to Greer.Who knew her kryptonite would be Knox?
“If you don’t need me anymore tonight, I’m calling a car.I could use some extra sleep.”Standing in the booth, Greer climbed over Knox, hopping to the floor before storming toward the door.
“Ughhh!Damn, stubborn woman,” Knox said, throwing his napkin on the table.Standing, he walked quickly after her.“I’m taking you home,” they heard from across the room as he chased after her.Looking at each other, Dex and Tyler both burst out in laughter.
“And they say I’m awkward,” Dex said through his laughter.
“You’re not awkward,” Tyler argued, wiping her eyes.“That was awkward.”
“Aww, thank you, baby.”He pulled her to him, placing a kiss on her temple.“Did you notice he also managed to stick me with the bill?”
“Yeah, but it was so worth it to witness that.”
“True.Come on, I’ve still got a lot to do tonight.”Standing, Dex pulled Tyler up from the booth, placing a hand on her back to lead her out of the restaurant. He had left enough cash on the table to cover their meal with a nice tip.
Tyler had to admit there was something about this man that left her wanting more.It seemed that the more layers she peeled, the more appeared, each one better than the last.
