Knox chuckled.“It’s Jim Thorpe, but we can wait until later for that fight.”Looking up at his blazing green eyes, she found him with a grin that matched hers. She laughed, pushing past him to return to her shift. He followed her inside, reaching around her again to get the door. She had actually found herself pausing this time to let him.
Turning around to walk backward into the room, she winked at him.
“Oh, and thanks for the compliment.”Waving her hand down her body, she laughed when he rolled his eyes.
“Just don’t let it go to your head, sugar,” he called as she walked to the bar.Sugar.He had begun calling her that all the time now.Since it was definitely better than Bambi, she let him get away with it.Truth be told, she actually liked it as it rolled off his tongue. But if asked, she would happily set herself on fire before admitting it to anyone.
Greer went about her business doing her best to ignore Knox the rest of the night. She knew he watched her as she made her rounds through the dark tables, but he watched everyone. It was his job, after all.
At one point, he disappeared to drag a customer who would not stop grabbing one of the dancers out of the VIP room.Knox marched him out the front door, holding him by the collar.Later, he broke up a fight between two men near the front of the stage, hauling them both outside, both in a headlock in his massive arms.
She had given up ever hearing anything to help Dex when she walked up to a table of scary-looking men.It was obvious by their appearance that they were flashing way more cash than they should.
If she had to guess looking at them, she would bet her paycheck they worked near the docks. They were discussing a special shipment that was due to haul out in a week. One of the men was laughing about how one of the cargo had clawed a nasty cut on his cheek.
Greer took their orders as her heart pounded in her throat.Could they be talking about the women they were looking for?
Turning toward the bar, she hunted along the back wall until she found the bright-green eyes she knew were watching her. When she nodded her head slightly, she saw his head immediately cut to the table.Holding up one finger, she begged him to keep an eye on her as she tried to get some information from the men.
Returning quickly with their orders, she slowly began to set the glasses down.
“So, I don’t remember seeing you in here before. What brings you to town?”she said with as much fake enthusiasm as she could muster.
“We are waiting on our cargo to ship,” one of the men said in a heavy accent.
“Oh yeah? Are you on one of the boats docked around here somewhere?”
“The Mariposa Bonita,” one of the other men said, puffing up his chest.Really, the beautiful butterfly? What kind of name is that for a cargo ship?
“That’s a great name. What do you haul?”She knew she was pushing it, but then she didn’t expect them to answer either. They probably assumed she was just trying to get a larger tip.
“Cargo.”They all busted out in laughter at the answer. She would like to roll her eyes, but refrained. Why did all men think if you had boobs and worked in a gentleman’s club, you had no brains?
She laughed with them as she ran her hand down one of the men’s arms like they expected her to.Maybe, if she could get at least one of them interested in her, they would let more information slip. She had more information already than anyone else had found out, the name of a boat.
“Well, my name is Brandy if you need anything else.”She had never used her real name in a strip club, so she saw no reason to start now.It made stalking her a little harder.
When she started to walk away, the man who thought he was so clever pulled her into his lap.She would have panicked if she hadn’t felt herself lifted up three seconds later. When she was set on her feet again, she found a wall of muscle in front of her.
“Sugar, table two is asking for you.Why don’t you head on over there.”Greer turned to walk over to the other side of the room.“How are you gentlemen tonight?”
The noise from the music quickly drowned Knox out as she moved across the floor. At least she didn’t have to worry about one of them waiting for her to walk out tonight. There was definitely an advantage to being escorted to and from work by a fierce-looking Neanderthal.
