CHAPTER13
“Hey.”Dex and Tyler both jumped at the pounding on her bedroom door.Only one person they knew could make the wall vibrate with just his fist.“Zip up and come tell us what happened.”
Dex grinned at Tyler as he tried to catch his breath.Earlier, Dex had found the first store closed for the night, pulling in back.He had barely got the car in park before dragging Tyler onto his lap.
Now, he lay on her bed, trying to convince his heart to slow down as he calculated how many pieces of their clothing were spread through the living room of her apartment. At least they had made it through the door before the clothes started flying. It seemed they just couldn’t get enough of each other. Not that he was complaining.
“Out of your system yet?”he asked Tyler with a grin.
“Shut up and get out there before he tears the door down.”Rolling into a sitting position, Dex spied his underwear across the room.He did not, however, find any of his other clothes.“Where are you going like that?”Tyler asked, sitting up on her elbows.
“To find my pants.”With a wink, he opened the door to the bedroom in nothing but his boxer briefs.
He laughed, finding Knox standing near the couch. He held Dex’s pants in one hand and covered Greer’s eyes with the other one.She was trying to pull away from him while wrestling with the hand over her eyes.Rearing back, he slung Dex his slacks with a scowl.
“Thanks.”
“Knox!”Greer snapped as she struggled against his hold.“I can’t see what’s happening.”
“Nothing to see,” he growled back as Dex pulled his pants up, buttoning them.He found his shirt still flung on the floor near the door.Sliding it on, he turned to Knox, holding both hands up in question.Tyler had slid on a pair of sweats and was leaning against the doorjamb, laughing.
“I take offense to that last comment,” Dex said.
“Damn it!Let me go.”With one last elbow to the gut, Greer wrenched out of Knox’s hold.Dex was positive Knox had simply let her go, but he faked the effect of her gut punch like a pro.She spun around, punching him a couple more times, but no one believed she was putting much power behind them.“Asshat.”
“You’re among friends. You can admit freely it turns you on when I manhandle you,” Knox said with a smirk.
Dex just shook his head. This was definitely not the same guy that led the search to find Thayer.Yeah, he had been gruff and abrasive, but he didn’t even bait Memphis this much.Greer punched his arm one more time before slumping down in a chair, holding up her middle finger at him.
“Is that an invitation?”
“Asshole,” she growled.Knox put his hand on his chest in mock surprise.
“I don’t think we know each other that well yet, but if you insist.”Greer let out a frustrated screech that would rival any animal in the wild, which only made Knox grin wider.
“Greer, you’re just feeding into it,” Tyler said with a laugh, taking a seat on the couch.
“I know, but I can’t stop.That’s the worst part.”
“Okay, now that we’ve all determined Knox is a horny jackass, let’s talk about what happened tonight and what we do from here,” Dex said, making Knox growl at him before sitting on the floor against the wall.Dex accepted a small high five from Tyler as he sat down next to her on the couch. They had both noticed Knox hadn’t actually denied the allegation.Turning back to him, Dex flinched slightly at the angry sneer coming from the man.
“I’m not horny,” Knox hissed through gritted teeth.“I’m tired.I spent the night throwing half our clientele out the door for wandering hands.I think I just need to pin someone against the wall.”Tyler tried her best to hide her snort of laughter at his choice of words.“Oh, for fuck’s sake, you know what I mean.”
“Anyway,” Dex tried again.“We followed the men to a hotel near the docks.I managed to put a tracker on the truck.”He continued to detail their exploits from tonight, leaving out the part after they left the men.
“I can watch the tracker after work until they settle in.Knox, can you take point during the day? It’s programmed to set off an alarm when the truck moves. We can mark the locations it stops and check them out later. In the meantime, we just have to continue what we’re doing.”
“I have some ideas of how to pinpoint where the ship is docking now that we have the name,” Tyler added.“It’s worth a look, even if it turns out to be nothing.”
“Sounds good.I think we should get together sometime tomorrow afternoon when we’re all a little more awake.Come on, Knox.Let’s head out.”Dex stood, pulling Tyler off the couch with him.Giving her a quick kiss, he walked over to Knox to give him a hand up.
“Yeah, I have a Skype interview, weirdly enough, tomorrow morning for a new teaching position. It might go better if I don’t look like I have a heavy alcohol habit.Good night, ladies.”Knox gave a small wave before walking toward the door.Dex followed him out, pulling the door shut behind him.
The next morning, Tyler woke up with the light streaming in her bedroom window.Rolling over, she checked the time.Eleven.A solid eight hours of sleep, not too shabby.
Knowing it would already be too hot outside to go for a run, she opted for a cup of coffee instead.Pulling on her robe, she headed out into the kitchen.Adding one of the K-cups of light roast to the coffee machine, she waited for it to brew while she pulled up the local paper on her reader.
“Why?”she heard uttered from across the room.Looking up, she found Greer glaring at her from the door of her bedroom.“Why are you up in the middle of the night?”
