“Keep it up.I’ll just work that smart mouth out of you later.”
Dex stalked over to where she was. With a quick look around, he pressed his body against hers, leaning down so he could whisper in her ear.
“I dearly hope so.”His warm breath wafting over her ear had her almost on her knees.
Tyler and Dex completed another section of rail, leaving just one more piece for the morning before calling it a day.
The SAC of the Houston office had called earlier, requesting Dex come into the office to update them on what was happening.Tyler dropped him off at his hotel room with a quick kiss before heading to the shop to park the truck.
“Come on, sugar, you’re as good as you’re going to get. We’ll be late,” Knox called at the bathroom door about the time Dex was heading across town to the FBI office.
“What is that supposed to mean?”Greer growled, throwing the door open. She stood with her hands on her hips, ready for a fight as she narrowed in on the laughing green eyes attached to the asshole sprawled on her couch.
“It means you can’t improve on perfection,” he said, grinning at her.Nope, turning on the charm wouldn’t save him this time.“I mean, damn, look at you.”Well, shit, maybe it would.
“You’re an idiot,” she responded, turning back to check her makeup in the bathroom mirror before he caught her fighting a smile.
“I don’t doubt it, but that won’t save us from being late.”Heaving his large, hard body off of her couch, Knox wrapped a hand around her upper arm, pulling her out of the bathroom.
Grabbing her purse on the way by, she let him drag her out the door before jerking her arm out of his hand.
“You don’t have to manhandle me with your large paws.I’m coming.”With a huff, she stomped down the stairs in front of him.
“If I was manhandling you with these large hands, I guarantee you’d be coming in four seconds,” he mumbled behind her.She could feel the blush creep up her neck as she chose to ignore him. What was she supposed to do with this man who made her want to scream in frustration in one breath and scream in ecstasy the next?
Well, technically, she hadn’t gotten close enough to him to know if he could make her scream in ecstasy, but she was pretty sure he could if her dreams were any indication. With a mental eye roll, she swore to herself that she wouldn’t let him get to her either way.
Settling into the passenger seat of Knox’s rental car, Greer waited until he pulled away from her building before turning to look at him.
“I have an idea,” she said.
“Here we go.”
“Stop being a dick,” she huffed for the second time.Knox looked over at her, his eyebrows raised.
“I’m not being a dick.Holy fuck.”He snorted in derision before starting again.“I’m sorry. What is your idea?”
She crossed her arms over her chest as she stared out the window.Yes, she was acting like a petulant teenager, but he just seemed to bring out the worst in her.
“Come on, sugar, tell Daddy your idea.”Greer couldn’t stop the bark of laughter that snuck out.
“Jerk,” she said with another laugh as she turned to look at him.“I was thinking about those men from the club. What if I really turn the heat up tonight if they show?If I can get the one to think I’m interested, maybe I can get more information about where they’re holding the girls.I might even get him to take me to them if I play my cards right.”
“Oh, fuck no.We already shut that idea down on Tyler,” Knox growled, cutting her off.He pulled into a parking space in back of the club, shutting off the car’s engine.“You stay the fuck away from them.”
“I don’t need your permission.”
“You do if you’re planning on doing something that stupid.”With a snarl, Greer jerked the door open, climbing out of the passenger seat.Slamming the door behind her, she stomped toward the entrance with Knox hot on her heels.
“Hey, I’m serious, woman.”Ripping open the back entrance, she stepped into the hallway before spinning around to stab her finger at his chest.
“I heard you the first time, but for your information, I’m not as stupid as you think I am.I know how to take care of myself.”
He grabbed the finger, holding on tight when she tried to jerk it away.
“I never said you were stupid.I said your idea was stupid. There’s a difference.I would never call you stupid.”
Finally managing to get her hand back, Greer turned, stomping toward the women’s dressing room, an area she knew Knox couldn’t follow her. When she reached the curtain, she spun around, pointing the same finger at where he still stood watching her.
“Fuck you, Knox Monroe.”Spinning through the curtain into the room, she found a roomful of eyes turned to her.The ensuing roar of frustration from the hallway had several eyebrows lifted at her as well.
“Sorry,” she said, leaning against the wall. She would just let him get to his post before heading to the front to begin her shift.
“You know, honey,” one of the older dancers said, walking over to her.“This is only going to end in one of two ways.Either that man is finally going to lose it and kill you, or he’s going to fuck you against the wall so hard he makes the angels weep. For your sake, I hope it’s the latter.”
With a laugh, she pushed through the curtain to walk to the main stage.Greer rolled her eyes before following her out of the room to head for the front. It would have to be death, because no matter how bad she might want it, she would never sleep with such a controlling man.
