COWBOY
They just played “Your Truck” at Woody’s.
I’m a little disappointed.
Why is that?
COWBOY
The way you stared at my ass the first day we met, I would’ve bet money my jeans would’ve made it into the song.
I don’t remember staring.Maybe a quick glance.
COWBOY
Whatever gets you through the day, Princess.
Olivia clears her throat beside me.
“You know, in my experience, when you can’t go one night without talking, youaredown bad for each other,” she whispers. The other girls are chatting away and she says it low enough so that no one else hears.I set my glass down on the end table and sigh, before turning back to her and putting my head in my hands.
“I’m really in trouble here, aren’t I?”I wonder if Haden is thinking of me as much as I’m thinking about him tonight.
Oliva laughs and shakes her head.“Yeah you are.Fucking cowboys.”
CHAPTER FIFTY
Haden
“You play pool, handsome?”I hear over my shoulder.I turn to see a brunette in a skimpy, almost see-through blouse behind me.I give her a friendly smile and nod, uttering the same sentence I have for the last six months any time a woman invites me to get to know her a little better.
“I do, but I’m not really feeling it tonight.I’m just gonna stay here with my boys.”
She laughs and tosses her shiny hair over her shoulder.“You can’t even sneak away for one game?”
“No thanks. Not tonight,” I say kindly.“Enjoy the band.”
I turn back to three pairs of eyes staring me down as I’m mid-sip of my drink.
“Enjoy the band?” Nash repeats.“You alright?”
“Wejustsat down.In case you don’t remember us kicking your asses.”I point to Nash and Cole.Asher and I just destroyed them at team axe-throwing.
“Sure it has nothing to do with the way you’ve been following that neighbor of yours around like a lost pup?”Cole asks.
I scoff.
“Sorry I’m late. What’d I miss?”Wade says, sliding into our booth at Woody’s Sportsplex. It used to be a pub, and now it’s the town’s entertainment, especially in the off seasons.Which is why it’s packed tonight.
“Nothing,” Asher smirks.“Just Haden acting very un-Haden-like.”
Cole chuckles, then glances down at his phone.“Christ,” he mutters, quickly flipping the screen over.
I take a sip of my beer.“Why the fuck are you blushing?”
“Ginger sending you not-safe-for-work photos while you’re in public again?”Nash asks with an all-knowing grin on his face.
“Hey man, appreciate it while you can.Don’t they say that, once you’re married, all that spontaneous shit ends?”Asher asks.
