Drake ranthrough the woods toward the cabin. He wanted to kick his own ass for not figuring out who Penny’s stalker was. He had become so caught up in Penny that he couldn’t see what was right in front of his eyes. Of course it was the one person who would have full access to her.
Her fucking secretary.
In the apartment, when he turned to his animal’s senses and inhaled, he caught the scent of Lydia in the apartment. Her scent hadn’t been there before. He didn’t understand why Penny’s secretary would turn on her and stalk her the way she did. Penny hadn’t told anyone at her company about the lottery money, so it couldn’t have been that.
Then it hit him.
He thought back to when Lydia was acting flustered around him in Penny’s office. She wasn’t flustered because of him, it was because of Penny. The slight hint of arousal he had scented on her wasn’t for him, it was because of Penny. She didn’t stand outside Penny’s office because she was nosey, it was because she wanted to hear what was going on in the office with the woman she desired.
She had a thing for Penny.
Shit.
A fatal attraction.
“The cabin isn’t much farther,”his brother Doru announced through their telepathic link.
“I see it,” Cyran alerted them along the same link.
Most shifters could speak to each other along a telepathic link that was forged by a bond. The three being brothers, sharing the same bloodline, granted them the link since they were pups.
They had left their truck behind, wanting to sneak onto the property without alerting Lydia. They traveled in their wolf forms, knowing they could move faster on four legs than two.
The minute he realized that Lydia had taken Penny, he immediately called his brothers. They knew how much Penny meant to him, that he had waited most of his life for her. They each knew that the Gods would reveal their true mates to them. They just had to be patient, and it appeared that Drake was the first of the brothers to find her.
He knew without question that his brothers would ensure that Penny would be returned to him safely.
He gave Doru Lydia’s name, and they ran searches on her, finding everything out about her that they could dig up. Nothing was out of the ordinary. She held a steady job, paid her taxes, owned a house, and hung out with a few friends here and there.
She was just a woman who’d snapped.
During their research, they found that she had inherited a cabin in a remote area from an uncle. Looking at the cabin on satellite images, he knew that she would have brought Penny to the cabin. He just prayed he was right.
He drew to a halt at the edge of the woods. He let loose a howl, sensing his mate was near. His brothers were on opposite sides of the cabin to ensure that no one escaped from the house. He looked around and found a minivan parked on the gravel driveway. He trotted over to the vehicle and sniffed around it.
Penny’s scent.
She had been in the minivan. His gut had been right. His wolf made its way around the van and froze as the front door banged open and the porch light turned on. He crouched down low as he watched Lydia walk out onto the porch with a gun in her hand. He cursed when he saw that she had on some type of dark negligée.
“Who’s there?” she shouted, waving the gun in her hand. She stepped onto the top step as she scanned the yard. She paused as her eyes settled on his form.
His wolf let loose a menacing growl as his eyes locked on her. He displayed his sharp incisors as she pointed the gun at him. Another growl rumbled deep within his chest as he looked at the woman who had abducted his mate.
“I don’t want to shoot you, you mangy mutt. Now get!” she hollered. If he had been a regular wolf, he would have ran away. Wild wolves were very skittish around humans. He rose to his full height, unafraid. She cocked the gun and took aim at him, not seeing Doru hopping silently over the porch railing, still in his wolf form.
Doru growled as he attacked. She screamed when she turned to see another large wolf barreling toward her. The gun discharged into the ceiling as Doru wrestled her to the ground, his mouth locked on her arm. Drake took off, jumping over his brother and the crazed secretary. He knew his brothers would handle her.
He had to find his mate.
He ran into the cabin, finding an open concept with a living room, dining area, and kitchen. A room with a partially opened door caught his attention. He could smell that Penny was close. He rushed toward the back of the cabin and brushed the door open with his snout.
“Drake!” she cried out.
His keen eyes took in the sight of her tied down to a large bed, dressed in the same dark gown as Lydia. He moved quickly over to the bed and stood up, with his front paws on the bed.
His wolf grew angry seeing her tied down. He nipped at the rope with his teeth and tried to pull.
“As much as I love to see you in your wolf form, I really need Drake. Give me my two-legged Drake, please,” she pleaded.
