Gavin was jolted awake by a piercing scream. His animal growled, not sure where the threat was. His body flew forward ready to fight. He took in the room and didn’t see any anything.
Damara!
He turned to find her fighting the covers from her body.
“Damara! Wake up,” he shouted, gripping her arms as she swung them through the air.
She cried out again, fighting whatever she saw in her dream.
“It’s a dream. Wake up!”
Her body paused, and her eyes snapped open, glancing around until her gaze landed on him.
“Gavin?” she whispered, her fingers touching his stubble-covered chin.
“I’m here, baby. It was just a dream.” He collected her to him, her body racked with sobs. His wolf paced, unsure what to do while their mate cried against his chest. “Let it all out. I have you.”
He settled back against the plush pillows, holding her while she let all of her pain go. He didn’t know what she had dreamt about, but whatever it was, it affected her something fierce.
He brushed her hair from her face while the tears flowed. He swallowed hard, wanting to take the pain from her. His wolf certainly didn’t like seeing their mate in this condition. He didn’t know what else to do but to hold her close. His beast, wanting to help, pushed some of their power into hers. It seemed to help her quieting sobs.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered, her lips brushing his chest.
“There is nothing for you to be sorry about, Damara.” He tipped her chin back so he could stare into her eyes.
Even with red, swollen eyes she was the most beautiful creature in the world. He wiped her tears from her cheeks and leaned forward and laid a kiss to her lips.
“But I just—”
“Stop, Damara. I’m your mate, and if you can’t cry on my chest, then what good am I?”
She sniffed again. He captured another tear that escaped her eye with his finger. He was to be her alpha, her mate, her confidant.
As her mate, he was to provide for her, protect her, cherish her, pleasure her, comfort her…these were responsibilities he was charged with.
“You are too good to me. I wish I could remember everything.” She rested her head on his chest.
He pulled her close, pressing her naked form against his. He willed his cock to stay down, but it had a mind of its own.
“I’d do anything for the woman I love,” he murmured, slowly trailing his fingers along her back.
She shuddered from his touch.
“Even after all these years, you still love me?” Her eyes were wide, staring up at him. Her emotions fluttered between disbelief and awe.
“I’ve never stopped, Damara. In my heart, I knew you were out there somewhere. I felt you here.” He thumped his chest with his fist.
Tears appeared in her eyes, and she immediately wiped them away.
“I never gave up on you. My wolf told me you were out there somewhere.”
“Thank you. For not giving up on me. On us.” She settled her hand on his chest and blew out a deep breath.
“Do you want to share what you were dreaming about?” He tugged the covers over them, her body shivering next to his.
“Was I in a plane crash?”
Ice slid through his veins at her question. He drew in a deep breath and knew he’d have to confirm what her subconscious was trying to tell her.
