“I should have known better. I shouldn’t have taken your blood without explaining everything to you about mating.”
“Okay.” She didn’t want to rush him on. Her back was still sore, and it was a little difficult to breathe. Her lungs seemed tight.
That’s what happens when you’re stabbed in the lung, she thought to herself. She flinched at the memory of the knife piercing her back.
“First of all, that human did not know what he was talking about. Vampires only ever have one mate. If we would have never met, I would continue to walk this earth in search of you.”
Athena’s heart pounded against her chest. Just the thought of never meeting Sorin brought her such sorrow. To think that he would have continued searching the world over for her…
It was pure fate at work to bring them together.
Sorin’s gaze met hers, and deep down she knew he was telling the truth.
“Second of all, we’ve only half mated. You gave yourself to me, but I have not given you me.”
She widened her eyes at his admission.
“What do you mean?” she asked. She tilted her head and stared at him. Joy filled her chest at the realization that Clay had been wrong.
“Vampires are immortal. We can live for centuries. It would be unfair for fate to give me a mate if we can’t spend all eternity together.” Sorin swung his legs up on the small bed and brought her into the crook of his arm.
She laid her head on his shoulder. “You’re saying I can become immortal?” She pulled back and glanced up at him.
“That’s exactly what I’m saying. I was irresponsible and didn’t tell you everything before we fell into bed.”
“Would you have to change me? Make me a vampire?” she asked. She didn’t know if she wanted to give up her life, the sun, eating—
“No,” he said fiercely. He tipped her face up to his. “You will need to drink from me about once a month. My blood will allow you to have immortality. You will never age again. You will stay as you are for all eternity.”
Athena stared up into Sorin’s eyes. She didn’t know how, but she knew he was telling the truth.
Her heart swelled with love for the man who had swept her off her feet and had done what he’d promised.
Nothing will keep me from you.
“Will you complete the mating bond and spend the rest of eternity with me?” Sorin asked.
“Yes,” she answered, a small smile spreading. “Will I change in any way?”
“You will gain all of my strengths but none of my weaknesses. You will draw power from my blood. By taking it today, your wounds will heal almost immediately.” Sorin shifted in the bed on his side. There was barely room enough for them, but he made it work somehow.
Sorin lifted his wrist to his mouth and gently bit into it. Two fat drops of blood appeared on his skin. He held it before her lips. She glanced up at him, and he patiently waited for her.
Opening her mouth, she placed it over his bleeding puncture wounds, sealing herself to him forever.
