Monster.
The woman’s word echoed through his head, and that was not how he wanted Athena to see him.
For the human hunters, he’d be that monster.
Just as soon as he explained everything to Athena.
From the kitchen, he could see her shiver slightly and draw the blanket resting on her shoulders tighter.
He and Athena had much to discuss, and he didn’t want to be interrupted. No one was to walk through the door. Even if the building was on fire, they were to leave him with his bride.
She sipped on the strong alcoholic drink he’d made her to calm her nerves.
The stark fear he’d seen on her face when he’d first walked into his bedroom had almost brought him to his knees.
Never would he want the woman he was to spend an eternity with to be afraid of him.
It was the human brain that would take more time to understand and comprehend what he was about to discuss with her.
As an immortal, he had all the time in the world.
“Who were those people?” Athena’s voice broke through his thoughts.
Sorin grabbed the goblet sitting on the counter and downed the contents. He set it down in the sink before making his way into the living area.
He’d had to feed again to beat down the tendrils of his thirst.
Do you want to?Athena’s words echoed through his head. He closed his eyes briefly, fighting the urge to snatch Athena up from the couch and sink his teeth deep into her neck.
It had taken every ounce of strength he had to not bite her.
“They are hunters. Very few humans know about my people. This group are a vicious militia who have it set in their mind to eradicate my people.”
“They were going to murder you?” She gasped, her cup paused in front of her face.
He walked over to the couch positioned directly across from Athena and sat on it.
“Yes. My people have been hunted down for centuries. But most humans were no match for me.”
“Did you kill that man?” Her voice was an octave above a whisper.
“The one from tonight?” He shook his head, meeting her eyes. “No. He lives.”
“What are you going to do with them?”
He paused, not used to being questioned. Her curious gaze pushed his defenses down. She was learning.
The hunters would be released. This time as a last warning. Clay Weber was going too far. Sorin would be meeting with Linkin later to discuss the breach in security and how the humans had infiltrated his property.
“We’re going to get information out of them. The humans have boldly begun attacking my people and killing innocent vampires.”
“You said that a few humans know of vampires. How is that? Why don’t more people know? We’re smart. We can handle it—”
“No, humans are not. If we let it be known that vampires walked this earth amongst humans, they’d panic, and when humans panic, there would be war. It would be one that would consume the entire planet. Instead, we live in secrecy. All of us who are not like the others.”
“We’re ‘the others’?” She cocked a beautiful sculpted eyebrow. A teasing glint appeared in her eyes.
There she is, he thought.
