Kamila’s core clenched. Just thinking of him running after her had her breaths coming fast. She studied her hands. She tugged her cloak closed and refused to look back at the naked alpha.

“What did you scent?” she asked for a change of subject.

Maxius didn’t answer her at first.

“There were three wolves. Two who attacked, and it would seem one stood off to the side and watched.”

Kamila squeezed her eyes tight, trying not to imagine her grandmother being taken down by ferocious wolves. She grew nauseated at the visual. Hazel was one hell of a witch with powers that matched Kamila’s, but defending herself from multiple violent wolves was something else.

She should have been there.

Regret filled Kamila, and she wasn’t sure if that would ever go away.

“We will find them, Kamila, and when we do, there won’t be anything to stop me from claiming you.”

Maxius couldn’t believe he had been so forthcoming with Kamila. The second he had shifted back and seen the heat in her eyes, all bets were off. He had never planned on telling her she was his mate.

But he had made a promise.

She would be his.

“You talk big words for a man who knows we can never be together,” she whispered, walking away from him.

Hope blossomed in his chest.

She felt it, too. There was no way she couldn’t. The way she reacted to him said it all. Witches, like wolves, had someone chosen for them by fate.

“Your grandmother and I believe that one day wolf and witch could be allies again,” he snapped and followed behind her.

There had been a time when witches and wolves were once allies. The wolves had even become protective of them, fought alongside them, and mated with each other.

A century ago, that had all come to an end.

The death of a powerful witch ripped a tear in the alliance between the two species.

It was thought to be at the hand of a wolf.

The killer was never caught.

Witches no longer trusted wolves.

“You do know that once it gets out that Hazel was killed by your kind, my people will be hard to control.” She spun around suddenly.

Fire was in her eyes, and Maxius almost crashed into her.

“It’s history repeating itself,” she said, “and this time, it was our most powerful witch. Do you think witches will take this lying down?”

Her chest rose and fell rapidly.

“So witches want blood. Why did you come to me to find the wolves who are responsible?” he retorted, resting his hands on his hips.

“Because the alpha should be honorable, and your wolves will confide in you,” Kamila said. She used her finger to poke him in the chest.

Maxius snagged her hand and gripped her tight. “The wolves in question do not belong to my pack.”

“How do you know?” she asked.
