There was no way he would show to the funeral.

“I…it’s nothing.” She shook her head but then glanced ahead.

Three figures walked their way.

Holy hell.

It was Maxius.

“What are you wolves doing here?” Kadir moved to stand in front of Kamila.

“We are here to pay our respects to Hazel and your coven,” Maxius declared.

Kamila stepped to the side where she could see him and the two men he’d brought with him.

“We are also here as a safety precaution.”

Kadir stood to his full height. “We don’t need wolves protecting us. We have enough men to ensure our people are safe.”

“Be that as it may, I told Kamila the wolves who attacked Hazel were not my pack. We will not interfere. You won’t even know we are here.”

“Now see here—”

“It’s all right, Kadir,” Kamila announced. She stood by his side, not wanting to be blocked. There were many things her dear cousin would need to protect her from, but Maxius was not one of them. “If the alpha of the local pack would like to pay his respects, then so be it. But your men are to remain in human form and stay to the shadows.”

Kamila ignored Kadir’s hard glare.

“There are only three of us. My beta, Khan, and my enforcer, Saku. We are just here to ensure the wolves do not show.”

“With the amount of witches and warlocks here tonight, they would be fools.” Kadir huffed.

The sound of a bells chiming signaled they were ready to start the ceremony. Kamila glared toward the trail. It was empty.

The coven would be waiting on her arrival.

“We must go,” she murmured.

Kadir held out his arm to her. As her guard, he would escort her to the ceremony.

Kamila avoided Maxius’s gaze. Kadir guided her past, but Maxius’s arm shot out, and he snagged hers, pulling her from Kadir.

“What the hell?” Kadir growled.

The two other wolves prevented him from rushing toward her and Maxius.

“Have you lost your mind?” she snapped.

He led her a few feet away. Kadir’s angry glare was met by Maxius’s cold one.

“Listen, after the ceremony, I need to speak with you,” Maxius said.

She disregarded the chill sliding down her spine at his lips brushing her earlobe.

“We don’t have anything else to say to each other.” Her cheeks grew warm as she thought back to earlier in the woods. She didn’t know what spell he had woven over her, but she would have to resist.

If she had allowed that last kiss to go any longer, she would have done anything he’d asked.

His hand tightened on her arm.
