“My grandmother was killed by a wolf.”

Chapter 3

“And you have deduced that it is me?” Maxius growled.

His dark eyes locked on her, and she was sure better men quaked in their boots at his glare.

Kamila didn’t have an issue meeting his hard gaze.

“If I was going to blame you, I wouldn’t hesitate to do so,” she replied haughtily. Kamila hadn’t realized how much bigger than her the alpha was. Whenever he had come around in the past, he had stayed far away from her.

He was a handsome man. His dark skin piqued her curiosity. She found herself wanting to get closer to him, to study him. It didn’t help that he was only clothed in his jeans. Her gaze roamed his perfectly sculpted physique and trailed down to the slight dusting of hair on his lower stomach. It disappeared into his jeans.

She tore her attention away and looked over at Kadir. He wanted patiently for her orders. Blowing out a deep breath and trying to will her heart back down to a normal pace, Kamila turned back to Maxius.

Kamila sensed his power. He was a strong alpha, and this was the closest she had ever been to him. His eyes glowed amber. She could almost see his beast in his eyes.

“Then why was I dragged here like a common criminal?” He folded his massive arms across his chest.

“I already apologized for my cousin’s rash behavior,” she snapped.

Kadir could be stubborn and headstrong. He always reacted first and then questioned.

Kamila had to fight to keep her gaze from roaming his nakedness again. Her heart did a little pitter-patter at the sound of the low growl emitting from his chest.

“We brought you here because you are going to find who did this to my grandmother.”

“And if I don’t?” he asked. His eyebrows rose high.

Kamila smirked and stepped forward. She didn’t care that her cousin and his men were watching. If she were going to have to assert herself as the head witch in charge in Hollowgate, then she was going to have to start with none other than the alpha of the local wolf pack.

“You don’t want to see my bad side, Alpha,” she murmured. A warm tingling sensation coursed through her body. Her powers were beyond that of a mere witch. Her lips curled up in the corner. “My grandmother is lying dead in our sanctuary because of a wolf. One of your wolves, and let me tell you, there’s not much left that could set me off.”

Maxius didn’t back down away from her. She knew what he saw in her eyes. It was the flames of her ancestors.

The eternal flame of her people burned bright inside her.

She would be willing to unleash her fire on those who’d dared to kill the one woman who’d believed in her.

“Now will you be honorable and help me? As the alpha, you are responsible for the actions of your wolves,” she said, her voice dropping down low. He was a wolf, he would have no trouble hearing her. “I’m sure you don’t want to go to war over a few bad wolves.”

Maxius stared hard at her then nodded slowly.

“Of course we will help find who did this,” he agreed.

Kamila smiled, satisfied that the alpha had made the smart choice.

Yelling sounded out in the corridor. Kamila glanced over at Kadir and jerked her head toward him. He strode over to the door, but it flew open with a bang before he reached it.

“Where is our alpha?” a deep baritone voice demanded.

An enraged group of men stalked into the room. Their scowls deepened when their gazes landed on Maxius.

“I’m so sorry, Your Grace.” Amber, one of the only female warriors, scrambled in behind them. Her eyes were wide, and she looked panicked. Her short dark hair was kept cropped close to her scalp. Her black cloak flowed around her while she rushed over to Kamila.

Kadir, Athan, and Jorah positioned themselves in between the wolves, blocking them from Kamila and Maxius. Growls circulated in the air. Kadir and his men didn’t back down. They were in the midst of an intense stare-off.

“It’s quite all right, Amber,” Kamila assured her.
