Chapter 1

Something was afoot.

Kamila Stone sat in the back of the plush luxury vehicle as it flew along the empty highway. Closing her eyes, she conjured a cloak around it to keep the local human police from picking up the speed.

She was in a wicked rush.

She glanced out the window and watched the scenery pass by in a blur.

“I don’t like it when you are this quiet,” Kadir murmured. His grip tightened on the steering wheel.

She turned to look at him and let loose a sigh.

“I felt it. Right before it happened,” she whispered.

His somber gaze met hers in the rearview mirror.

A crushing pain had surged through her body hours ago, leaving her with a sense of emptiness. When the call had come, it was no surprise.

Kamila had known.

“There wouldn’t have been anything you could have done unless you were there with her,” he replied grimly.

“I should have left immediately, but I just didn’t want to believe what I was feeling,” she admitted. Guilt filled her.

“If some shit went down, Hazel would have protected you with her life. You are the heir.”

Kamila snorted.

Heir.

She would rather have her grandmother alive and well to advise her.

“Don’t give me that. You were groomed for this. That is why she had me train my entire life to protect you, cousin,” Kadir reminded her.

Kamila sat back and drew her red cloak around her. A chill passed through her.

That’s odd.It was warm in the car. She didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. She closed her eyes and decided to try to see with her ethereal eyes.

Wolf.

The word was whispered for only Kamila to hear.

Hazel.

Even in death, her grandmother was there.

Kamila opened her eyes. Kadir stared at her in the rearview mirror.

“What is it?”

He always picked up when something was wrong. They had been raised together. Neither of them had any siblings. His mother was the sister of Kamila’s mother. Throughout childhood, Kamila was always considered special. A powerful little witch who would one day inherit the reign of the most powerful coven in the country.

Kadir, a warlock, though not as powerful as Kamila, was physically strong and trained as a warrior to protect her. He was to always be her shadow. They were as close as brother and sister. Kamila considered him her best friend, someone she could trust to hold her secrets and have her back.

“It’s Hazel. One word. Wolf.”

The car grew silent. They should be arriving in the small town of Hollowgate shortly. It was where their family originated. Hazel remained in the town along with other family members, because it was the heart of the coven, Eternal Flame.
