Maxius ran beside her, not wanting to leave her side. If there was danger, he would protect her first.

Saku and Khan ran ahead. For now, they would remain in their human form. Shifting could make things worse.

They rounded the corner and came to an abrupt halt. The sight was one of chaos. The members of the coven were frantically running. A wolf was on the roof of the temple, growling down at them.

Its amber eyes met Maxius, but he couldn’t place the wolf. It spun around and leaped from the building and tore off toward the woods.

“Saku and Khan. Shift and hunt him down,” Maxius ordered, striding forward.

His men charged ahead at full speed. They soared over the fence near the building, shifting mid-jump. They landed on the ground on all fours. Their clothes fell away in tattered shreds.

Without looking back, they raced after the wolf.

“Shit,” Kamila uttered. She ran toward a crowd of people hovering together near a stone fountain located before the temple. She shoved her way forward.

Maxius followed behind her, gently moving people out of the way so he could see. A man lay on the ground, unmoving.

Maxius knelt next to Kamila who was running a hand over him.

“Is he dead?” Maxius asked.

There was so much blood that there was no way this man would live. Maxius breathed in the scent of the wolf that had done the attack. It was the same scent that had been on Hazel. He’d hold on to this information until later. If he spoke up now, he was sure this would worsen the situation.

Kamila sat back on her heels, her shoulders dropping. She turned to him with somber eyes.

“Yeah,” she whispered.

“Where did the wolf come from?” someone cried out.

“Was it the same one that killed Hazel?” a male’s questioned.

“Are we not safe here anymore?”

Maxius ignored the stares of Kamila’s people. A women’s cry broke through the air as she dove on the ground.

“Sam!” she cried out, pulling on his cloak. “What happened?”

“The wolf,” someone replied.

The woman bent down and rested her head on his chest, sobbing.

“Where is my cousin?” Kamila snapped. She stood and searched around.

Maxius wondered the same thing. If he and his men were posted around the area, how had the wolf attacked?

“I’m here, Kamila,” Kadir announced. He jogged over to her, his gaze dropping down to the man on the ground. He released a curse and ran a hand over his head.

Maxius straightened, a growl vibrating from his chest.

“How did you let this happen?” he snapped. He moved toward the warlock. What if the wolf would have come for Kamila? This was too close to his mate.

“Let it happen?” Kadir narrowed his gaze on Maxius. “We went after the other two wolves. You volunteered to ensure this wouldn’t happen. Our people are coming under attack—”

“Enough,” Kamila shouted, holding her hands up.

The crowd shifted around them, uneasy.

All eyes were on him.
