Soon,Maxius promised his beast.
Maxius paused at the sound of a car driving down the road off in the distance. He stood still, waiting to see where the car would go.
“What is it?” Kamila whispered. She leaned close to him and held on to his arm.
The vehicle continued on.
“It was nothing. I thought a car was pulling into your driveway.” Maxius relaxed slightly. He turned back to the woods and sensed all three wolves gathered together. They were near the spot where they had attacked Hazel. “Come on. They are waiting for us.”
He took Kamila’s hand as they trekked into the woods.
“Do you know who they are?” Kamila asked softly.
It wouldn’t matter how low she kept her voice, the wolves would hear her. He shook his head. Since the wolves didn’t belong to his pack, he wouldn’t know them.
Whoever it was threatening his mate would realize how much of a mistake they had made.
“Whatever happens, you stay close to me,” he murmured.
The only response he got in return was a snort.
They followed the path into the woods. The tall trees blocked out the rising sun, leaving the area dark. It didn’t bother Maxius due to his keen shifter sight. His wolf paced back and forth, sensing the others.
The hairs on Maxius’s arms rose.
They continued on down the path. Kamila’s grip tightened. He knew it had to be hard to go back to the spot where her grandmother had died.
This would be the third time she’d had to return to this spot.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
“I will be once this is over. I can’t lose any more of my people,” she snarled.
Heat flowed into him, and he knew she was barely containing her powers.
“You will get your vengeance, and we’ll protect the coven,” he promised.
They stopped in the clearing, and he pulled her close to him. He didn’t want to take any chances.
His ears picked up at a small twig snap. His gaze turned to the right and landed on a black wolf stepping from the thicket.
Maxius’s head flew around when two others emerged from the woods.
Breathing in deeply, he confirmed these were the three wolves who’d killed Hazel and the two members of Eternal Flame.
“Are you going to remain in your wolf form or are you too cowardly to speak to me in your human form?” Maxius challenged. He pushed out his alpha waves and stood his ground.
The wolves took a step back. Their ears flattened on their heads when they met his gaze.
None of the wolves were alpha, but the one refusing to back down from Maxius’s glare had big balls.
The brown one stepped forward. The air around him shimmered as he began the transformation from beast to man.
Soon, a man knelt on the ground.
Maxius stiffened.
It couldn’t be.
