“Remind me to never get on your bad side,” Maxius announced, standing from his kneeling position.
Kamila chuckled. She may not have been able to save her grandmother, but she had taken care of the person behind her death. The wolf would never harm anyone again.
Her attention was caught by the small inferno to her left. Turning to it, she flicked her hand, extinguishing the flames. She hadn’t meant to catch any of the woods close by on fire.
“You don’t have anything to worry about,” she murmured.
Maxius wrapped an arm around her shoulder and drew her into his body. They stood there together and watched the flames disintegrate the body.
“The two wolves won’t be a bother anymore.” Maxius pressed his lips to her head. “As I promised, you got to serve justice on the wolf who was the cause of your grandmother’s death.”
Kamila’s eyes fluttered shut. She leaned into his warm body and breathed in his earthy scent.
Her gaze locked on the flames that had consumed Leon, and she felt a sense of peace.
It was over.
“Thank you,” she whispered.
Chapter 10
“Will the wolves attack us again?” Azin asked.
Maxius stiffened at the question.
“No. The wolves that attacked Hazel and the others did not belong to my pack. They were rogues, wolves not bound to any pack,” Maxius said.
Kamila and Maxius stood before the council in the temple. Maxius and Kamila had shared their account of what had happened in the woods that morning.
“The three rogue wolves who acted on their own are all dead. Maxius took care of the two, while I extinguished the leader.” Kamila held her head high while standing before the four witches.
Kadir stood on the other side of Kamila and looked at him over her head. His mate’s cousin had yet to warm up to him. Maxius smirked, ignoring Kadir’s glare.
With the recent events, they hadn’t had a chance to share their mating with anyone. Maxius knew once they got near any of his wolves they would scent the mating on the both of them.
“We will need to meet with the entire coven and announce this information,” Hilda said.
“I agree. With two deaths by wolves at Hazel’s funeral, the coven will not feel safe until we can assure them the threat is gone,” Levana stated.
“I plan to be transparent with my people. I wanted to speak with you first to seek your advice,” Kamila said. Her crimson cloak flowed around her to the floor.
Maxius had to push down the urge to touch her. Her long dark hair cascaded past shoulders.
He lifted his gaze and connected with Kadir who had a deep scowl on his face. Maxius grinned at him before turning his attention to the council.
“We shall make arrangements. Plans for the burials of Tarren and Danica are underway. We need to give them a little time,” Azin advised. “We will notify you when plans have been finalized for the funerals so we may choose an appropriate day.”
“Thank you.” Kamila bowed her head. She spun on her heel and walked toward the entrance.
Maxius followed her out of the room. Kadir was behind him, his steps heavy and calculated.
Kamila flew through the temple and exited via the front double doors. Maxius jogged down the stairs, unable to take his eyes off her. She started down the path that led toward her house. It was a short trek, and it had been pointless to drive to the temple.
“Where do you think you are going, wolf?” Kadir asked. He positioned himself between Kamila and Maxius. “Your pack lands are in that direction.” He pointed east.
“I go where she goes,” Maxius murmured. He stared directly into Kadir’s eyes, unafraid of the warlock.
“I don’t think so, pal.” Kadir snorted.
