“He’s going to be here soon. These humans need to go,” Sascha warned.
Kelsey’s heart raced. Was she talking about Xomor? That brought fear to Kelsey. She didn’t want Mythia to go off and fight him. She had just gotten her mate, and she didn’t want to chance losing her.
“Who’s coming?” The guys grew nervous. They eyed the sky as if sensing what Sascha and Mythia did.
“Jasper, I love you very much.” Kelsey took a step forward, but the sound of Mythia’s low growl behind her kept her from going any farther. “If our friendship means anything to you, you have to trust me and leave. Now. I promise I’ll explain everything soon.” Tears blurred her vision. She didn’t want anyone to get hurt on her account. Guns and a jealous dragon would not fare well.
“Just tell me why you can’t leave right now.” He turned his attention to Mythia. “If she’s not a hostage, let her go.”
“Never,” Mythia hissed, brandishing her fangs.
“Then we’ll take her back. We’re not afraid of you.” The guns were raised and pointed at Mythia. Kelsey flew in front of her and threw her hands up. Mythia’s growl was growing louder. She didn’t know how much longer she would be able to keep her mate from going after her friends, and pointing guns in her face wasn’t helping.
Kelsey had to diffuse the situation fast.
“I don’t want to go!” Kelsey shouted angrily. “She’s right, I’m not her prisoner. I’m her mate.”
The roar of a dragon shook the ground around them. Kelsey stumbled, trying to keep from falling to the ground. Mythia’s steady hand held her up.
“You must go inside now,” Mythia commanded before facing the direction the sound had come from.
Kelsey looked up and saw a large blue dragon fly overhead. It was a magnificent looking animal. She had never seen one like it before. Her feet were rooted in the same spot as she took in the beautiful beast before it disappeared from sight.
Yelling and slamming car doors interrupted her thoughts.
“Kelsey!” Jasper was racing toward her.
“No! Go back. Get in the truck!” she hollered as she rushed to meet him, ignoring Mythia calling her name.
They met in the middle. He tried to grab her hand and pull her with him, but she pulled away.
“I said I’m staying.”
“Did she put a spell on you?” he asked.
“No. She’s my mate.” She pulled the neckline of her dress away so he could see Mythia’s mark. “You know what this means.”
“I don’t want to lose you,” he admitted sadly.
“You won’t, I promise. When everything is settled, we’ll have a long talk so I can explain everything.” Reaching up to cup his cheeks, he stilled and stared into her eyes. Whatever he saw there must have been enough for him. “You’re family. We won’t be apart from each other, I swear.”
She didn’t want to think that one day he would pass away from old age while she would remain the same age for thousands of years. She made a vow to herself that she would cherish their friendship forever.
The ground shook again with the roar of the angry dragon.
“Kelsey!” Mythia shouted again.
“Go,” Kelsey whispered. Wrapping her arms around him in a quick hug, he dropped a kiss on top of her head before releasing her. As he backed away, his eyes locked on hers as the group was scrambling and returning to their trucks.
She offered him a smile before she turned and jogged toward Mythia and Sascha, who were standing at the base of the front steps.
The sky darkened again. This time, the shadow was larger than before. She heard her name screamed again. She lifted her gaze to the sky, but she was too late. Her body was jerked up into the air.
Large talons encircled her waist and held on tight.
Kelsey screamed. The ground was growing distant, and fast. The dragon carrying her off was moving as fast as the wind.
Panic flooded her. She tried to find something she could hold on to. What if he just decided to drop her? She would never survive.
