Mythia took Kelsey’s hand again and entwined their fingers together. She wasn’t going to lie to her mate. She would tell her the truth.
“His name is Xomor. He’s a crazed dragon who challenged me.”
“And did you win that night?”
“Of course I did.” Mythia tilted her head back. Why would her mate ask if she won during a battle with another dragon? She may not be as old as Xomor, but she was a mighty dragon.
“I was worried when you were in the saloon and he came running at you,” Kelsey chuckled, then fell into a fit of laughter. “He was twice your size.”
“I have fought in many wars over my long life, and I can handle the largest of men. There is a modern saying I love: ‘The bigger they are, the harder they fall.’”
Mythia felt Sascha and Raven’s eyes on her. She turned and glanced over at them. Sascha stood and walked over to them.
“I need to speak with you for a moment,” Sascha announced.
Something was wrong. The seer must have been picking up what had occurred between Xomor and her.
“Please excuse me.” She leaned over and pressed a kiss to Kelsey’s forehead. Standing, she walked with Sascha to the other side of the room, where Raven joined them.
“Mythia, there is something about your mate,” Raven began, her black eyes intense. She was a powerful dark witch that Mythia trusted. She led the local coven, and had been at Mythia’s side for a long while. There was no other witch that Mythia would allow to perform such magic on her mate. “I don’t get the sense that she’s fully human.”
Mythia folded her arms across her chest and waited for her to continue.
“What I’m about to tell you must be kept in the utmost confidence.”
Any information about her mate could be used against her. Until she had sealed the bond completely, the link between the two of them could be tested. She didn’t want to chance Kelsey rejecting her claim.
“Yes, of course. You know you can confide in me.”
“Me too, but I’m right, aren’t I? She’s more than what she appears,” Raven murmured.
“Yes, and I don’t think she knows. I felt the same when I first laid my eyes on her. I could instantly tell she sensed the bond between us. As we all know, humans are not susceptible to the mating bond like us.” Mythia replayed Xomor’s speech in her head. How the hell had a secret like that been kept from her mate? She quickly caught them up on her short battle with Xomor and their conversation. “Apparently, Xomor is her ancestor, and I don’t think she’s aware of a dragon link in her family.”
“That is heavy shit.” Raven’s eyes grew wide. “Are you going to tell her?”
“Of course I am. He’s claiming he is to protect his kinship who owns the medallion.”
“That means you must claim her soon.” Sascha gripped Mythia’s arm. “He cannot go against the mating bond. But until then, he’ll have a claim over his kin.”
“He will not take her from me,” Mythia bit out through clenched teeth. She held back a growl, not wanting to alert her mate that there was an issue. She would seal the bond with her mate tonight. Kelsey wouldn’t be able to resist the call. The dragon’s blood in her, no matter how minute, would answer the call.
“There’s a disturbance coming.” Sascha’s eyes suddenly clouded over as a vision took her. She grew deathly still while the gods showed her what they wanted her to see.
Mythia’s muscles tensed. Her beast grew quiet, waiting to hear what the seer was going to share with them.
Sascha jerked, blinking her eyes into focus and looking at Mythia.
“The humans. They are going to storm the castle,” Sascha murmured.
“Why?” Mythia snapped. This was the last thing she needed. There wasn’t going to be time to deal with the humans. Not with the threat of a dragon trying to take her mate away. Even though he had the right, being Kelsey’s kin, she would still refuse to part with her mate.
“They’re searching for her,” Sascha replied.
They all turned and looked over at Kelsey, who was again staring out into the gardens.
“What did you see?” Mythia demanded. She needed to know how many humans they were talking about. If only a few, the castle security would deal with them.
“There is a man. One who she is very close with her,” Sascha began.
