Mythia panicked at the sight of tears trailing down her face.
“What is all of this?” she asked, spreading her arms wide. Sniffing, she wiped her face with the back of her hand.
“This is the collection of treasures I’ve amassed over my lifetime. Dragons scour the world in search of the perfect gifts and trinkets for their mates.”
She came to stand in front of Kelsey and knelt down on one knee.
This was a very vulnerable position for a dragon to be in.
“For their mates?”
“Yes. I have been preparing my entire life for this moment. We are destined to be together. I vow to always protect you, provide for you, and pleasure you.” Mythia searched Kelsey’s face, and didn’t see anything but awe and wonder, so she continued on. “I will never love another person. You are for me, Kelsey. Please say you accept my treasure, my dragon, and me.”
Kelsey didn’t say anything. She tore her gaze away from Mythia and looked around the room. Mythia’s heart pounded as she waited.
“Oh, Mythia. The only thing I truly need is you and your dragon,” Kelsey said. Mythia jumped to her feet and pulled Kelsey to her. Lowering her head, she took her in a long, passionate kiss.
She teleported them to the little nook in the corner that was decorated with thick rugs and oversized pillows. It was her little oasis. A place she would come to relax and be around her treasure. Mythia glanced at the scones on the walls and blew a puff of air toward them. Fire flared to life, lighting the candles. Mythia lowered the lights to the vault, basking the room in darkness. The candlelight was all she would need.
“What is this area?”
Mythia guided her into the midst of the pillows. “I come here when I want to relax and dream,” she admitted. Taking Kelsey’s hand in hers, she pressed a kiss to the back of it. “Get down on your knees.”
Kelsey’s eyes widened, but without a word, she did as she was told.
“After today, your life will be forever changed. Accepting me as your mate will mean that you will walk throughout time by my side. You will no longer age. You will live longer than your family. “
“But I’ll have you.”
Mythia’s heart softened.
“You will always have me.” Mythia turned her attention to the box resting on the shelf along the wall. She had prepared this area in the hopes that she would one day claim her mate here. She took it down and placed it on the floor beside her.
Mythia moved closer to Kelsey and knelt down in front of her, putting them at eye level with each other. Her gums stretched and burned as her fangs descended. The air grew electric. The fates were looking down on them with their blessing.
Mythia’s magic was maintained. As much as her dragon wanted to break free to meet Kelsey, she knew she would have to wait. Soon they would, and she’d even take Kelsey out for a flight.
Mythia trailed her fingers down the side of Kelsey’s neck, brushing away the runaway strands of her hair, and held it at an angle.
Leaning forward, Mythia ran her tongue along the same path. The pulse at the base of Kelsey’s neck spiked.
The candlelight flickered.
The tension in the air thickened.
She gathered Kelsey close and sunk her fangs into her mate’s shoulder. Kelsey’s body arched toward her, even as she whimpered. Mythia’s dragon roared, spewing fire to celebrate the claiming of their mate.
Mythia lifted her head. Kelsey’s eyes were shut, and her breaths were coming fast. Mythia lowered her onto the pillows and laid with her mate while the enzymes from her bite coursed through her body.
She wouldn’t change into a dragon, but the chemistry of her body would be altered. Kelsey would cease to age. She would live a long life with Mythia. Dragons could live for thousands of years.
Mythia hadn’t even reached her prime yet.
She licked Kelsey’s wound to slow the bleeding until it stopped.
Mythia trailed her fingers along Kelsey’s face, waiting for her body to relax. She had never taken a mate before, but from what she was told, it could take some time for humans to acclimate to their new genetic makeup.
“Are you okay, my love?” Mythia asked softly.
