I laugh. “The only thing I can come up with is that cupid is a sadist.”
She laughs too. Not a scoff, but a real, amused laugh. It's light and lovely, and all of her offenses are immediately forgiven. When she isn't guarded, she's breathtaking.
Because I'm under her spell again, I decide to take a chance. “You're so sure that things will turn out badly in a relationship with me, but it's possible that we could live happily ever after.”
She snorts. “You believe in that?”
I frown. “Why wouldn't I?”
“Because this is real life, Max. I'm not a princess needing to be rescued by a brave prince.”
“I'm not talking about a fairy tale. I know relationships take work. But if you find the right one, you do whatever it takes to make it work.”
“You think I'm the one?” Her pink lips press together in a dubious expression.
“I don't know. I won't know unless you let me take you on a date.”
Her eyes study me and I wonder what she's looking for. I hope it's sincerity. I hope she finds it.
Her head cocks to the side. “And if I were the one? What would you be willing to do?”
I lean toward her, capturing her gaze with mine. “I'd be willing to do whatever it takes.”
