She laughs a genuine belly laugh that makes her bump jiggle and probably wakes up her unborn child. “I vote for both, and definitely a full-time nanny. Listen, I don’t get out much these days—my husband has to use a tracking device to make sure I don’t just disappear to the mall and never come home—but I’m definitely coming back for the finals to cheer you on. Anyone who can make those marzipan flowers like this while juggling newborn twins deserves my vote and possibly sainthood.”

“I’ll save you a cinnamon roll,” I promise as she waddles awaywith her blonde ponytail bobbing with each step, and I give her a cheerful wave as she turns back. At least someone in this ballroom isn’t trying to stab me in the back with a pastry knife.

And with that, I continue to work away, but glancing up occasionally because I’m still fascinated by all of the drama unfolding around me. What am I saying? I certainly hope not. The stress of the day is just getting to me, that’s all. That and that ghost I met up with in the lobby.

“Peachy, except I need to make a quick cardamom run,” I tell them with the enthusiasm of heading to the grocery store during a zombie apocalypse. “The kitchen through the back has the good stuff, and my glaze depends on it.” I give them both my most winning smile powered by powdered sugar. “I’ll be right back before you can saybaking disaster that requires the fire department and maybe an exorcist.”

I hurry into the surprisingly quiet kitchen facility, the silence a stark contrast to the chaos of the competition floor. The industrial space gleams with stainless steel and purpose, like an operating room for food instead of humans, assuming the food has signed all the appropriate consent forms.
