“I haven’t even had the time, believe it or not.”

Even if he hadn’t preferred to spend the evenings talking to Nathan in whichever capacity—which was to be expected when something was new, and it didn’t mean anything deeper—Ken hadn’t…

There hadn’t been a need.

One thing he’d had time for these past couple of weeks was thinking, analyzing all the little things about his life he wasn’t too happy about.

He’d started with his job, but his focus had eventually shifted to other areas as well. That wasn’t to say that he wasn’t happy about the club. He loved the crowded establishment and the people he met there. One of the things he wanted to do when Nathan got to Tahoe was take him there.

But he’d had to accept that Blue Underground had met one main purpose, and that was letting him decompress and recharge from a job that didn’t give him anything anymore.

Lately, talking to the still enigmatic boy had given him both of those things.

“Are you going to tell me about him then?”

They were already seated by a table near one of the large windows by the time Lee spoke. The views were breathtaking, the lake in the background shining with the sun hitting its clear water.

Ken told him. He told him about the lost looks, the protectiveness he stirred in him. He told him about the things Nathan let slip, about his insecurities, the experiences he wasn’t so sure about. The times he wrapped him around his little finger and infuriated Ken, albeit not enough to do anything about it.

By the time he was done talking about the last couple of days, their food had already been served—Lee’s well-cooked steak and Ken’s saffron risotto with forest mushrooms.

Ken dug into it, enjoying the texture of what he was sure classified as fancy food for Ash.

“So what are you going to do?”

That was a loaded question.

“About what?”

“The boy. The firm. You pick.”

Ken shook his head, sighed. “I think I’m going to send in my two weeks’ notice soon. I have enough invested I could honestly live off that easily, but I don’t know if I could just not do anything. Maybe I’ll find something more hands-on, less corporate ladder.”

“Never thought I’d hear the words.” When Ken furrowed his brows, Lee chuckled. “You’ve just realized the job was burning you out, but you think I hadn’t? You’re lucky you’re not a sub or I would’ve taken over eons ago.”

“Right.”

The two of them would’ve never worked out, even if they weren’t both Doms, but Ken appreciated the sentiment. He heard what Lee wasn’t saying, the affection in his tone.

“And what about the boy?”

“I don’t know.” Ken scrubbed a hand down his face. “It’s new. I shouldn’t be making decisions this early.”

“We all know D/s dynamics can move quite fast. You’re not the first Daddy to meet the love of his life and move in right away.”

Ken nearly choked on the perfectly cooked rice. “We’re not talking about love.”

It was too soon.

Definitely too soon, no ifs or buts about it.

“Fine.” Lee assessed him with that piercing stare. “So what’s holding you back from exploring whatever it is with him?”

“What do you think?” he groaned. “I shouldn’t be so hung up about this. Hell, I haven’t been in years, and now I’m throwing myself into the deep end of the pool?”

Lee chuckled. “I have to say, it’s a good look on you.”

“Oh, shut up.” This was the time when, if he’d been a brat, he would’ve thrown his napkin in Lee’s direction. They were certainly lucky best friends was all they were. “But I wanted to talk about the event. I know Nathan has a room booked already, but you should sign him up for Best in Show.”
