She turned to face me, her arms crossed over her chest as though hugging herself. I couldn’t read her expression, but I could see the slump of her shoulders and the loss of the starch in her spine. “Thanks for letting me stay. I know it’s the last thing either of us wanted…but I do appreciate it.”
We held the stare for several beats before I nodded once. I swallowed the lump in my throat. “You’re welcome. I’m going to make a sandwich. Want anything?”
She shook her head. “No, thanks. I’ll make dinner tomorrow night if that’s okay. I know it’s early, but I just want to go to sleep.”
“That’s fine. I’ll see you in the morning then.” I turned to leave, but she called me back.
“Chase, we still need to talk about the speaking engagement.”
I bit back a sigh but nodded. “I know. Tomorrow. We’ll talk.”
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
“Night, Chase.”
“Night, Eden.”
