“Sounds perfect.”
I lean forward to kiss her, when a look of pain crosses her face and she doubles over. Panic claws at my throat as she grabs my arm in a tight grasp. “Charley, are you okay?”
“I-I’m not sure.” She breathes out through her mouth and then straightens slowly. “I think I’m in labor.”
“Are you sure?”
She nods and then her eyes are wide on mine.
“What happened?”
“My water just broke.”
“How do you know?”
“Because my pants are wet.”
I earned the nickname Iceman in baseball because no one intimidated me. I faced down one hundred mile per hour balls both behind the plate and at the plate.
But that man is nowhere to be found when faced with Charley telling me her water broke.
“Holy shit. Okay, let’s go.”
I’m shaking like a leaf but pick up Charley in a bridal carry.
“Nate, put me down. You’ll ruin your suit!”
“I’ll buy another damn suit.”
She looks up at me, her arms draped around my neck, and the world goes calm around me.
In her eyes, I see our future. One full of laughter, love, and family. It’s everything I’ve always wanted and never thought I’d have.
“Ready to go have our baby, Firefly?”
She nods with a tremulous smile, and it’s like she’s reached in and squeezed my heart. “As long as you’re with me, I’m ready for anything.”
The woman is pure magic.
And all mine.

CHARLEY
Three months later
I tugon the hem of my suit jacket and run a hand over my ponytail, smoothing out the flyaways.
It’s my first day on the job as Events Manager for the Florida Bull Sharks and the first time I’ll be away from my baby girl since she was born.
Between the two, my stomach is a jumble of nerves that has me on the verge of being sick.
Fortunately, Nate doesn’t start in the front office for another two weeks, so he’ll get to play Mr. Mom until then. After that, the new nanny will be here to take care of Lucy.
It took a few weeks to find the right fit for a nanny. Some were too old, some were too young—and did nothing but make “fuck me” eyes at Nate—and some of them made me think of drill sergeants.
Then one day, the service sent over Julian’s resume. He had an impeccable record, a degree in education, and recently moved to Cape Sands with his husband.
