“It’s a notification from the doorbell system. Nate insisted on having it, especially once the pregnancy news broke.”

“Has anyone been lurking around?”

“So far, no paparazzi have landed on my doorstep, thankfully, but many of the townspeople of Madison Ridge have managed to give me their opinion.”

I pull up the app and tilt my head, zooming in on the picture. “What is that?”

Megan comes around and looks over my shoulder. “A big-ass box.”

“I see that, Einstein.”

A large, rectangular box, wrapped in sage-green paper and a white bow, sits on the front porch.

“We need to go see what it is.”

“We?”

“Well, yeah. I’m no doctor, but you can’t get that box inside by yourself.”

Twenty minutes later, the pretty wrapped box sits in the middle of the foyer.

I’m breathless as I slam the front door. “I need to exercise more.”

“Give yourself a break. You’re baking a human.”

She’s not even the slightest bit winded, damn her.

“What did you order?”

“Nothing. But it’s addressed to me, so let’s open it.”

I untie the bow and we tear at the paper until what’s in the box is revealed.

I gasp and my eyes fill with tears.

It’s a crib. But not just any crib.

It’sthecrib. The one I’d been looking at a couple of weeks ago. I didn’t think he’d paid any attention.

“Oh, Charley. It’s beautiful.”

The wood is a soft gray with gorgeous sloping curves and drawers built in the bottom. My mind conjures up an image of a dark-haired baby girl sleeping, tucked in with pink blankets.

“Here, this came with it.” Megan hands me an envelope.

I tear it open, my vision blurry with tears.

This looks like the perfect spot for little Nugget to get some zzz’s.

Call me when you get this.

- Nate

P.S. I always pay attention when it comes to you.

I stare at his words, my stomach on a roller-coaster ride.

It’s like he’s in my brain, knowing what I want before I do. He makes it hard to keep him in the friend zone.
