“Good morning,” I said, ignoring his knowing grin. “Where’s Darla?”

“She steps outside to talk to big wolf boss,” he said. “Back soon. Here, I made you breakfast sandwich. You eat on the road.”

He handed me a foil wrapped sandwich the size of my head, as well as a banana and a napkin.

“What smells so good?” I asked, noticing the variety of delicious scents filling the kitchen. “It smells like a bakery in here.”

“I am nervous about date with my mate,” he said. “I wake up at four this morning and start baking for stress.”

He gestured to the counter where a selection of Tupperware containers and plastic wrapped items were stacked up to the bottom of the cabinet and my mouth dropped.

“What are you going to do with all of that?”

He shrugged. “You and Darla will eat. Or you take to hospital for friends.”

“Well, there’s nothing people like more than fresh baked goods in the employee lounge,” I said. “I’ll be sure to tell Stacy you baked these, then I can soften her up for your date.”

He frowned in confusion. “Why you are making her soft?”

I rolled in my lips to keep from laughing. “I mean…,” I paused, trying to think how to best explain the American idiom. “She will feel more favorable to you because she likes baked goods and will be impressed that you are such an excellent baker.”

Yuri smiled wide, turning to grab two giant armfuls of baked goods and set them on the table next to me. “You take these then, give to Stacy.”

He walked out as Darla walked in holding her own giant sandwich. She held it up and gave him a smile. “Thanks Yuri, this beats an Egg McMuffin from Micky D’s any day.”

“Is because I add herbs,” he said seriously. “You bring many baked goods to make my mate soft, okay?”

I could tell by Darla’s expression she had no idea what he was talking about, but she nodded affably. “Sure big guy, Kathryn and I will take care of it.”

“I leave bag here in bedroom,” Yuri said, “for next night when I’m back.”

“Sounds good,” Darla said. “I think Martha’s here tonight, but she won’t mind.”

Yuri headed out of the house, taking his own car for his date. After he left, I dug up a canvas bag, stacking a selection of baked good inside it. There were cakes, cookies, and what looked like some kind of lemon bars. Yuri was going to be the most popular guy in the ER after this.

“Did Yuri make all that?” she asked.

“Yeah, poor guy was stress baking all morning. I didn’t even know that we had all these ingredients at the house,” I said, throwing the bag around my shoulder.

Darla stalked closer and brought her hands up to cup my cheeks. She gave me a long, hard kiss that left me breathless, then stepped back, grabbing the bag of baked goods and putting it over her own shoulder. She nodded towards my sandwich.

“Grab your food and coffee, it’s time to bug out.”

“Where is Yuri taking Stacy for their date tonight?” I asked as we pulled away from the safe house.

“I’m not sure,” Darla said. “Maybe the restaurant he owns with his brothers. I know they’ll want to meet her.”

We both jumped as a loud explosion rocked the ground. Darla slowed, looking in the rear view.

“Damn it!”

“Was that…?”

I turned in my seat to see one side of the safe house engulfed in flames. Darla stepped on the gas, making the SUV shoot forward as she pressed a button on the dashboard.

“Yeah?” Lois’s voice filled the vehicle.

“The safe house in compromised,” Darla said.
