“Just…today was fun.” That wasn’t technically a lie. She was smiling because of today. “Your nieces, nephews, your sisters, yourwholefamily are all great.”
Liam didn’t respond. He was quiet as they pulled up to a four-way that he needed to turn right at to take her home. When he didn’t turn, she glanced over at him and found him staring at her. His eyes were narrowed at the edges, the way they did when he was making a decision, assessing something. Did he not believe her that that was what she was smiling about? Was he going to call her out? She had always secretly wondered if he could read her mind. Could he?
Now it was her turn to question him. “What?”
This time she was sure herwhatcame out as a seven on the defensive scale.
“Did you say that Yaya is settled for the night?”
Yes, she had mentioned that she’d been alerted that Yaya was in bed for the night by hisMission Impossiblefancy-schmancy sensors, but what did Yaya have to do with him believing her or not?
She nodded slowly, unsure of what that had to do with anything.
Without saying another word, Liam turned his attention back to the road, checked his side mirror, and turned left instead of right, which meant he wasn’t taking her back home to Yaya’s house.
Butterflies flitted low in her belly. Actually, they were a little lower than that. The fluttering sensation was located between her upper thighs.
“Where are we going?” she breathed.
“It’s a surprise.”
“Seriously?!” she said.
“Yep.”
For some reason, she was even more nervous aboutthissurprise.
“This is your house?” Frankie leaned forward, looking out the windshield, her mouth wide open as he pulled up the driveway. “Wow.”
Liam came to a stop, cut the engine, and turned to Frankie. “You are the first person to see it.”
She turned to him, her eyes searching his. “What about your sisters, your family?”
“I’ve been busy.” The truth was, he hadn’t wanted to show it to anyone else before now.
He started to get out, but she stopped him, putting her hand on his.
“Wait.”
He looked down at where their hands were touching and then back up at her. Her eyes sparkled in the moonlight. The gold flecks floating in the amber honey. As beautiful as they looked, he could tell she was nervous.
“Do you want to go? I can take you hom?—"
“Shut up!” Her arm flew up, and her hand covered his mouth. “I have to tell you something, and you have to promise notto speak until I’m done. No matter how bad you want to say something or how mad you get. Not a word. Got it?”
He stared at her, loving the feeling of her palm against his lips. That was how crazy she made him. Just the sensation of her hand against his was enough to make him go insane. He barely heard the words she’d said. He knew that it was something about him not speaking, even if he didn’t like what she said.
“Nod if you understand,” she instructed.
He did as she asked.
She lowered her hand. Her cheek hollowed, which meant she was biting it. She only did that when she was scared.
“Whatever it is, you can tell m?—”
Her palm slapped over his mouth, hard, as she spun around to face him. “Seriously?! You couldn’t stay quiet fortwo seconds?! Where is this man who everyone talks about that never says anything? I can’t get you to shut up.”
That’s because I love you.
