“A heart is a wealth that cannot be sold or bought, but can be given away”
—Gustave Flaubert
In the afternoon I called Sol because I wanted to see her again and clarify whatever was happening between us. I had realized that my relationship with Henry bothered her, but I couldn’t fully understand why she detested him so much. Much to my regret, my friend didn’t answer my call, so I had no choice but to send her a message:
“Sol, we need to talk.
Just tell me when and where and I’ll be there.
I love you”
She didn’t even read it, though I could see she was online, so I decided to give her a few days and then go to her house to face this situation once and for all.
For the rest of the day, I lost myself in a tangle of obligations. At seven in the evening, I left the office because I had an appointment with my doctor to discuss birth control options.
While I was in the waiting room, I received a message from Henry:
“What are we doing tonight?
Dinner out or picnic in bed?”
I smiled when I read it.
Me:
“I’m in my doctor’s waiting room
for the birth control thing. Not sure what time
I’ll be done”
Henry:
“I’ll pick you up. Send me the address”
I liked his proposal. I really liked that he wanted to spend time with me, and I allowed myself to enjoy the feeling of being cared for.
Me:
“I came in my car and regarding dinner
I like the picnic idea”
Henry:
“I’m coming anyway. Wait for me
Address?”
I sent him the address by message and couldn’t see if he responded because a minute later they called me to enter Dr. Machin’s consultation room. After a long talk in which she listed all the contraceptive methods and their advantages and disadvantages, I left having decided on the injection method. I would need to get it once every 3 months, and it was a safe, practical, and effective method, if done on time. That same day they gave me the first shot, and I scheduled a medical appointment in 12 weeks for the next one. The doctor clarified that I should use another method during the first week after getting the injection.
When I left the consultation, I was surprised to see him sitting in the waiting room. As soon as the door opened, he stood up and came toward me.
“Hello, darling,” he greeted me with a sweet kiss on the lips.
“Hi. You surprised me, I wasn’t expecting to see you here.”
“I told you I was coming. How did it go?”
