“But…” Mav looks so crestfallen.

“What is going on?” Ginny comes out of Heath’s room. He’s right behind her.

“Your dipshit brother is still single.” Mav sits back down on the couch with a frown.

“That’s it?” Ginny places her hands on her hips. “I thought something awesome happened.”

I just smile as the guys grumble about the bet. Maybe she’s not my girlfriend, but something awesome has definitely happened.

You can’t always trust that people are who they say they are. Wait and let them show you their true colors.

Monday morning,I ride to campus with Adam. He’s got classes an hour earlier than I do, but the extra fifteen minutes riding over and holding his hand as we walk toward his building make it totally worth it.

“Thanks for walking with me,” he says, swinging our joined hands.

“Any time.”

“What are you going to do for the next hour?”

“I’m not sure. Maybe go to the library and study.”

He stares at me with narrowed eyes. “Really?”

“Okay, fine. I’m going straight to University Hall for coffee, and then I’ll probably watch videos and look at TikTok until class time.”

I love his deep laughter and love it even more when I’m the one to bring it out of him.

“Hang later tonight?” he asks.

“Yeah.” I nod, and he pulls me into him and wraps his arms around me. “I’ll text you after your rehearsal.”

He keeps holding on to me, leaning side to side. “This was a good plan up until I realized I have to leave you for class.”

I squeeze his middle to show him I don’t want to go either.

“Okay. On three,” he says. “One, two—”

Before he says three, I push at his chest. “Get out of here, Dr. Scott.”

He scoops me up and heads toward the building. “Maybe I’ll just take you with me.”

“Oh no. Put me down. I need coffee.”

Inside, he finally sets me on the ground, but he doesn’t make any more progress on getting to class. His mouth slants over mine. I could kiss him like this for hours, but one of us needs to make sure he makes it to class. I really didn’t expect that person to be me.

“You need to go learn things, and I need caffeine. Later, stud.”

I’m grinning like a fool as he reluctantly heads off to class. I watch him until he starts into the room. He waves and winks, then disappears.

I’m lost in my own little Adam bubble when I hear someone call my name.

She says it twice before my brain snaps out of it. I peel my gaze from the doorway Adam went through to Janine walking in my direction.

Her gait slows the closer she gets.
