I seriously consider it, but then shake my head. “No. We have time. Tonight, you should enjoy your friends.”

“Think one of them can do something about the throbbing between my legs?” She bats her lashes then giggles.

“Not fucking funny.” I take her mouth, nipping at her bottom lip.

“Everly!” Grace calls her name and moves to stand in front of her. “We have to dance.”

She grins at me as she lets her friend pull her to her feet, then sends me a flirty wink as they go.

I blow out a breath and run a hand through my hair. I am in serious trouble with this girl.

SO BOSSY

EVERLY

Jack and I get into a sort of routine. I show up at his place sometime late in the morning after I’ve finished checking in on all the houses I’m sitting for. He works out while I go through his email and schedule, and then lie by the pool. Sometimes I work out with him, but only as an excuse to be closer to him.

It’s basically the perfect summer. Complete with kissing. Lots and lots of kissing and multiple orgasms. We haven’t had sex yet, which I haven’t pushed because it’s not like I don’t leave every day satiated, but I’d say it has something to do with neither of us wanting to cross a line we can’t take back.

I’ve also not stayed the night at his house yet, but tonight is the masquerade ball I bullied him into attending, and I’m thinking it might be the perfect night for a sleepover and to cross all the lines.

It’s late afternoon and I need to go back to my place to get ready, but the weather is perfect today. Bright sun, only afew clouds. I wish summer could last forever.

Jack’s phone rings and he pauses his stretching to answer it. A few seconds later he heads inside so I reluctantly pull myself out of the pool and dry off.

He reemerges, scanning the pool first for me and then smiling when he sees I’ve gotten out. I walk toward him, towel wrapped around me and hair still dripping.

“I’m going to head out and get ready. Do you want me to come back here, and we’ll drive over together?” I ask. My stomach is already a ball of nerves thinking about going to an event with Jack.

“I have a surprise for you.” His lips curve up and his brows lift playfully.

“O-kay,” I say slowly, but excitement builds quickly as he leads me into the house and down the hall to one of the spare bedrooms.

Jack pauses at the threshold and leaves room for me to pass by him. Two women are busy unpacking a trunk of hair and makeup accessories and there’s a dressing rack of gorgeous gowns in a variety of colors.

I whirl around to face him. He looks very pleased with the very shocked expression I’m positive is on my face.

“What did you do?” I ask in a slightly accusatory tone. This is…I am officially speechless.

“I thought you might need a dress for tonight,” he says.

“I have a dress.” Not one that compares to the beautiful ones on the rack behind me, but it isn’t bad. Okay, I probably would have been the worst-dressed woman there, but this is too much.

He leans in and brushes his lips over mine, then murmurs, “Fine. I’m a selfish asshole and I didn’t want you to leave.”

“Or you didn’t want me to show up looking a hot mess andembarrass you.”

With a slight shake to his head, he grins at me. “Not possible. You could go exactly like you are and still be the most beautiful woman there.”

He leaves me, like he didn’t just casually drop the nicest compliment I’ve ever gotten, disappearing back down the hallway. My anxiety spikes as I walk fully into the room.

“Hi!” The women say in unison. They introduce themselves as Chelsea and Nicole.

“It’s nice to meet you both,” I say. My voice quivers, giving away my nerves. “I’m a mess from the pool. I’m going to take a quick shower.”

“Take your time,” Nicole says with a reassuring smile.
