Am I losing this baby?
Honking and accelerating.
“Go the fuck around them!”
Thebump bumpas we hit the side of the road.
The baby…
Kazi and Mateo exchanging curses.
The slamming of brakes.
Why am I so sad? I wasn’t even ready to be pregnant.
Back in Mateo’s arms.
Strong chemical and sterilized smells invading my senses.
Mybaby. Let them be okay.
“She’s bleeding. Help her,now.” The harsh and angry tone must have come from Mateo, but it was further away. At the end of a tunnel.
“She’s losing a lot of blood!” This voice was unfamiliar. “Onto the gu—”
The warmth was stolen from me as my vision blurred and I was transported onto a cold and harsh table.
“She’s pregnant! Don’t take her without—”
“Security!”
Attempting to sit up to find my men, I caught sight of Kazi’s ashen face before an arm landed across my chest, pushing me flat on my back.
And then my world went entirely black.
Chapter 15
Yara
“You’re having twins.”
The words bounced around my skull for the thousandth time.
I hadn’t been awake long before my feet were thrown into stirrups, before an older nurse was gloving up, before she was giving me atransvaginalultrasound.
I hadn’t known what that meant until the stick was halfway inside of me.
I didn’t have time to voice my indignation before the screen caught my attention. My baby was too small to be anything but a mid-sized bean. And then another blob popped up on the screen, even smaller than the other.
That’s when the nurse had removed the pole from my vagina and ran from the room.
When the doctor returned, he had broken the news.
Two babies.
Kazi and Mateo weren’t even here to soften the blow. Just myself alone, in a hospital bed, spinning and spiraling.
I immediately began to ask what I needed for a paternity test to identify the father but the doctor had disappeared again, clearly not hearing me.
