“No,” I laugh despite the seriousness of the conversation. “Like I might get pregnant.”

“Oh my god,” she slaps a hand over her mouth, her eyes looking around us to make sure no one is eavesdropping into our conversation. I don’t even care at this point, but hospital gossip is brutal, and I’m glad she’s watching out for me.

“Basically,” I mutter, my appetite all gone. I wish I didn’t waste my money on this sandwich.

“And… is it a possibility?” she struggles to ask.

“It is,” I nod in distress. I got off birth control shortly after my second trip to Texas. I wasn’t interested in seeing anyone, and I just wanted to give my body a break.

How was I going to know that Dylan would waltz back into my life and that I’d be as weak as I am when it comes to him?

“So, now what?” Emily voices the question that’s been echoing in my head since last night, especially after the conversation with my brother.

“I’m going to wait for a couple of weeks, then get my blood drawn. To make sure,” I add in explanation.

“What about the morning after pill? You could do that,” Emily suggests. “You’re in the right place for it actually,” she giggles nervously.

I smile at her, trying to keep it together. “I can’t, Em.”

She nods in understanding, “I couldn’t do it either. If I was in the situation, I mean…” she waves her hands nervously in front of her.

“It felt good to talk about it,” I tell her and mean it. This is not something I could’ve discussed with my little brother. Totally uncomfortable for the both of us.

“So now that’s out of the way,” Emily leans over the table in between us, spreading her arms wide, “what about Dr. Nolan?”

“What about him?” I smirk at her.

“He asked me again about you today. I think he really likes you like that, Becca,” Emily insists.

“Em, I don’t thin…”

“This must be the cool kids table,” I hear a voice calling from the side and turn my head just in time to see Dr. Nolan grabbing a chair from a nearby empty table and dragging it to ours.

“Hey, Dr. Nolan,” Emily’s voice is all high pitched, sounding extra cheery all of a sudden. “I was just telling Becca that you asked me about her.” She gives us both a smile full of teeth that just infuriates me.

“And what did she say?” Dr. Nolan focuses his entire attention on my friend.

“She was thinking about it,” Emily winks at him, like they’re sharing a secret or something.

“Sheis sitting right here, guys.” I finally snap at the both of them.

“Ah, she’s right here,” Dr. Nolan points at me, all dramatic like, then turns surprised eyes at Emily.

“Oh my goodness, she is!” Emily claps her hands together. “And look at the time,” she pretends to check on her empty wrist. “I need to head back before Morgan gets on my ass for being late from lunch.”

With that, she stands up, grabs her food leftovers, and she is gone before I have time to gather my thoughts and say anything.

I am left staring at Dr. Nolan, who is just giving me the cutest smile. He really is a very good looking guy, and under completely different circumstances, I would’ve been ecstatic to be noticed by him.

“Hi,” he finally says, looking almost boyish-like.

“Hi.” I do a short wave of sorts, then drop my hand on the table. Not sure what that was.

“I’ve been meaning to talk to you for weeks now,” he goes straight for the jugular. “And every single time, you slipped right through my fingers. It’s really upsetting, you know?”

“Is it?” I can’t help the smile taking over my face at his teasing tone.

“Sure is,” he bobs his head up and down. “And now that I finally caught you here all by yourself,” he pauses and looks around us, almost like he’s expecting us to get interrupted by any unwanted visitors. “I am not letting you go until you tell me I can buy you dinner.”
