“But why?”

“Not quite sure on that one. But Shortie reported that your president asked him to look into her, and while Shortie didn’t give all the details, he did have to tell him something. So that he wouldn’t act suspicious, you understand.”

“I do,” I nod, but feel disconnected from the conversation. Up until now, I thought that I only had to worry about Ethan and about my mother. Wyatt would always be okay, so I never worried about him. But this thing with Becca now is something I did not see coming.

“Anyway,” Mr. Devereaux continues, “this little detail is a problem for me. A huge one.”

“I don’t think Becca will be a problem at all,” I insist. “She’s going back to Montana, and I’m pretty sure she’ll never come back to Texas, especially after this weekend.”

“That may be so,” Mr. Devereaux agrees. “But she seems to be interested enough in your person to want to stick around now and insist on making a statement to the police.”

“Sully will take care of it,” I assure him.

“You really think so?”

“No doubt.” I watch as the corner of his mouth raises in a conceited smirk.

“Is that why Mr. Sully couldn’t even talk her into getting in his truck to take them back to the hotel?”

He’s got a point there. Becca insisting on being my alibi seems to be throwing everything out of balance.

“We need her to go back home, and we need her to stay there. What you do with her after it is all said and done is up to you. However, what you do with her until then is a problem.” He pauses for dramatic effect. “Myproblem.”

“Understood,” I nod in agreement. I need to come up with a plan to make Becca not be so adamant to be a good citizen and try to get me out of jail. Especially when I’m not even there. I just can’t tell her any of that. “I’ll talk to Sully, and we’ll take care of it.”

“I want them both back to Montana within twenty-four hours, Mr. Knight,” he insists.

“On it,” I nod in confirmation. “I have a question.” Because I don’t understand why he cares so much about what Becca does or doesn’t do.

“How is Becca an inconvenience in the grand scheme of things?”

Mr. Devereaux’s nostril flare up at my inquiry. His black eyes get more intense, and I can see how he’s able to lead the crime organization that he does.

“It’s not necessarily about Rebecca,” he finally answers when he sees that I am not easy to scare.

“What is it about then? Because I don’t want Becca hurt in all this either, but there’s only so much I can do.”

“Mr. Knight,” he cuts me off. “The longer Rebecca remains in Texas, the more she puts my daughter’s life in danger,” he growls, revealing his Achille’s heel without really meaning to.

I shake my head in confusion mixed with amusement. “I have no idea who your daughter is. Every time I was with Becca, she was on her own. Who’s your daughter and how is she involved in any of this?”

“Emily considers Rebecca as her one best friend,” he says in a clipped tone.

“Emily?” Color me surprised. That’s who Sully and Puck came here to babysit.

“Emily Stewart is my daughter. You are all here because I am willing to help you.”

Well, I’ll be damned.

Becca

“I got you a cup of coffee.”

I jump about a foot up in the air when Blake Sully’s deep voice sounds from right behind me. I turn around so fast, I almost knock the paper cup out of his outstretched hand.

“Oh god, I’m so sorry,” I mumble when he manages to pull his arm back just in time. “I feel so jumpy.”
