“I can stay home,” Colt says out of nowhere.
Surprise doesn’t begin to cover how I feel at hearing his words. “What?”
“I can check if I can get a transfer to a college closer, so I can be home a lot,” he explains.
“Colt, have you lost your mind?” I can’t believe what I’m hearing.
“I’ll worry about you being here alone, just you with the baby.”
The way he’s looking at me is almost triggering another bout of tears.
“I’ll be fine,” I wave him off and turn my head to sniffle away from his watchful eyes. “I’ve been talking to our next door neighbor…”
“Someone’s in Miss Judy’s house?” Colt interrupts me in surprise.
“Yeah, her granddaughter,” I explain. “And guess what?”
“What?”
“She’s a single mom,” I open my arms wide as if I’m doing this big presentation.
“She is?”
“Yep. She has a little boy, he’s only six months old,” I explain. “And you know what else?”
“What?” He sounds a mused now. He knows I’m trying too hard.
“My boss at the hospital, she’s a single mom, too,” I tell him, bobbing my head up and down, willing him to believe I’ll be okay. “And she said I’d be just fine.”
“Well then,” Colt snorts. “If she said that…”
“Brat,” I throw a decorative pillow at his head. “I need to know you’ll be okay all the way in Michigan. I was thinking about moving there…”
“Really?” Colt’s eyes light up.
“Why not?” I shrug. “I obviously don’t have anything keeping me here.”
“What about this house?” Colt looks around the room.
This is the only home we both know. After our parents died and I got the money from their life insurance policies, I about ran to the bank to pay the mortgage off. We had to have a few things repaired over the years, but overall, it’s in really good shape, and it’s a beautiful house on an even more beautiful piece of property.
My cell phone dings with a message, making me jump in place, one hand pressing to my chest.
“You good?” Colt eyes me carefully.
“Yeah, it just surprised me,” I assure him.
Colton leans forward to grab my cell phone from the table. He glances at the screen and freezes.
“What the fuck…”
I instinctively know what this is about. I don’t understand though. How?
“What the fuck is this, Becca?”
He turns the phone for me to see what he’s talking about.
Peekaboo… where are you… You thought you could hide from me, bitch. Your head is still not safe hahahahaha
