Not in my world though. Things are finally happening, and what horrifies me the most is the fact that I was starting to doubt Dylan. Or at least doubt what he kept on saying was going to happen if we let our guard down.

“It scared the shit out of me,” Jessica’s voice comes like through a tunnel.

“Was it just one person?” I am almost scared to ask. And should I bring Dylan in here to question Jessica?

“I think so. I have those large spotlights that way. One of them is with a sensor. The sensor is high enough that only a person could set it off. Or a bird I suppose,” she muses. “Birds sleep at night though, don’t they?” she looks at me quizzingly.

“Uh, I don’t know. What about owls?” And I am blinking at her like one, too.

“Owls?” she snorts, but then changes her mind. “Yeah, owls don’t sleep at night. I think. When do they sleep?”

I’m not sure why we’re discussing owls right now. I am so confused.

“So, you think it was a person then?”

“I know it was a person,” she bobs her head up and down in confirmation. “I saw them. It was someone really short. I almost called nine-one-one, but then they disappeared. It was probably some drunk college kid.” She then turns her head to look at me. “Your brother have a girlfriend?”

“You think they were here for my brother?” I ask in shock.

“I don’t know. Why else would they be out there for?”

“Why would my brother’s girlfriend try to jump over the creek to come see him?” I deadpan. “I’ve never had a problem with any of his girlfriends visiting.” And that hasn’t happened in a while, I realize with a start. He’s been too focused on getting into a good college.

“Anyway,” Jessica waves me off. “I called a security company to come install more sensors around that area. And cameras. I want to be able to see what the hell is out there. Living in the woods like this is freaking me out,” she admits.

“Oh, I know…” I almost tell her that I know someone who could install all that for her since Dylan got his friends to do it on my property, but then I change my mind.

All of a sudden, I get this overwhelming need to go to Dylan and give him all this information.

“Do you mind if we do this tomorrow?” I ask Jessica in an abrupt tone. She raises her eyebrows in surprise and just stares at me. “I just realized that I did have something going on this afternoon after all.”

“Okay…” She drags the word out, clearly not believing me.

“I can come back tomorrow,” I assure her with one foot out the door already. “I’ll call you,” I say just as I close the door behind me. I don’t even have her phone number.

With that, I take off in a light run toward the back of my house. Dylan is not outside anymore. I rush into the house and lock the door behind me, then start looking for this man of mine who’s turned my damn life upside down. And he is my man whether I admit it to him or not. I am not ready to say it to him just yet though, but I can think of him as mine in my own head.

And now I realize that I am wasting precious time by thinking stupid things in my head.

“Dylan,” I call his name as I run through the house. Why do I live in such a big house? My parents thought it was perfect to raise their children in, and it’s a good idea in theory. Not when you’re looking for someone though.

“He’s taking a shower,” Colt calls from the couch in the living room. “And I’m waiting for Ben to pick me up. Actually,” he says with one eye on his phone, “he’s here now. I’m spending the night at his house. Love you.” And he’s out.

I go up the stairs, almost out of breath by the time I make it to the landing on the second floor.

“Dylan,” I call his name again when I hear the shower door opening and closing.

He shows up in the doorway, towel in hand, all his naked glory on display. If I wasn’t this wound up, I’d jump him.

“You okay?”

“I was talking to Jessica,” I throw a thumb behind me like she’s there. “She says a girl was out on her property last night. On the other side of the creek.”

“Fuck.” He drops the towel and starts looking for clothes to wear.

“Yeah,” I agree.

And seriously, fuck.
