“Isn’t he your father?”
“Sperm donor is more like,” Wrecker informs me in his cold tone. “But he is also my President. And if he orders me to kill you, I will do it with no hesitation,” he promises.
The tightness in my chest is getting stronger by the minute. My choices at the moment are very limited. By that, I mean that I only have two. One would be to take advantage of Wrecker’s surprising generosity and get a crash course in riding a motorcycle. Two, if I don’t even attempt to do number one, I will die on the spot. And I am not ready for that, I realize with a start.
“Do you think you could teach me how to handle a motorcycle by tomorrow night?” I let out a heavy breath and wait for him to answer.
“It depends on how fast of a learner you are,” his laughter booms around the empty warehouse. “Lesson number one,” he points at me, then starts walking toward the exit. “Stop calling it a motorcycle. It’s a fuckin’ bike, okay?”
I turn and follow him. “How does anyone know you’re not talking about a bicycle?”
“Trust me,” he calls back. “No one thinks I ride around on a bicycle.”
We find ourselves outside the building now. I watch him walking toward hisbike, and I wonder what I’m supposed to do.
“Fancy car you got there,” he juts his chin toward my sports car. It used to be my father’s. Blake’s. It was listed in the trust, and my mother allowed me to drive around in it once I got my license. Much to Uncle Kenny’s chagrin.
“Thanks,” I murmur, wondering if they’re going to come take it from me. I need to read those papers again and see if it’s listed on there.
“You gotta get rid of it, dude,” Wrecker informs me. “That won’t do.”
“But…”
“You’re either in or you’re out,” he reminds me. “And that car screams all sorts of out.”
Fuck, he’s right. How the hell am I going to get rid of it when I’m not even sure that it’s actually mine. Shit, I may have stolen it at this point. Just add a felony charge to my never ending list of current bullshit.
“I have a spare bike you can ride on until you get your own,” he tells me as he gets on his bike. “Follow me now.”
He doesn’t even give me time to reach my car before he’s revving the engine and starts rolling out of this weird, deserted parking lot.
I rush to my car and pull the driver’s door open rather forcefully. I sit down and start the engine, then take off in a cloud of dust, trying to catch up to Wrecker.
I panic for a second when I don’t see him, but then I hear him, so I head in that direction.
With my heart racing out of my chest, I embark on my new life. Within a day, I am an official prospect of the Steel Lizards MC, and on my way to becoming a full fledged member, with Wrecker as my sponsor.
My life as I knew it is over.
This is who I am now.
A newly minted criminal.

Emily
ten years later
“Hi, babe,”I yell into the phone when my new serious boyfriend, Steve, answers the phone. We just started dating, and I am high on the excitement.
“Emily,” he greets me, saying my name with a flourish. “It’s good to hear from you. I was going to call you later after work.”
“I can’t wait to see you!” I blurt out, feeling like I am back in high school all over again, talking to my first big crush.
“Not today, Emily,” he lets me down slowly. “I have a golf outing tomorrow, and I need to finish a few things at the office tonight. I’ll be working late.”
The way he informs me of all that should probably rub me the wrong way. He sounds so confident, almost overly so. He reminds me of my father in some ways. Except that my father speaks with a lot more authority than Steve does.
