“I was so in love with this man, I wanted to die when I learned the truth.”
A lone tear runs down her face, almost in slow motion, until it reaches her chin, and then it drops onto her chest, leaving a wet drop in its path.
“As it turns out, Adam had fallen in love with me, too.”
I gasp in shock, but don’t say anything.
“Then I found out I was pregnant. So, we were planning on eloping. I had some money saved up, and so did he. We were going to be okay.”
My heart is beating out of my chest as I start doing the math in my head before I ask something stupid like,is Adam my father?
“My parents somehow found out what we were planning to do. They threatened to have Adam killed.” Her voice is shaking now, and she looks sad and pitiful, but somehow stronger when she recounts what happened so many years ago.
“Adam worked for Jon at the time. He was his… mule of sorts.”
“Mule?” I squeal at the description. “What does that even mean?”
“A jack of all trades if you will,” mom shrugs. “Even though Jon was his employer, he cared about Adam. He respected him as a friend.”
“What happened?” I whisper in the quiet room.
“Adam went to Jon for help, and Jon promised he’d do it.”
I smile with affection. I can’t say I’m surprised by what she’s telling me. My father is a strict man, he runs a billion dollar empire, but he loves to help the people he is close to. And if he promised Adam to help him, I have no doubt that…
“Jon went to my parents and asked for my hand in marriage.”
“But…” I am so confused.
“I was being kept under lock and key at this point,” mom explains. “The plan was for him to take me away from them, bring me to Montana, then me and Adam would finally elope. Have our baby…”
“What happened?” It is obvious something bad happened since not only there is no Adam in the picture, but I don’t have any older siblings.
“Adam died a few days before Jon was going to pick me up,” mom tells me in her soft voice.
“How did he die?” It’s morbid of me to ask, but the shock from it all it just too much. I am not thinking clearly.
“He just dropped dead,” she shrugs. “They thought at the time that it was a heart attack. I had no reason to believe otherwise.”
My mind feels numb as I am processing everything she’s telling me. I mean, now that I have a beginner’s level knowledge in the medical field, it is possible that Adam just dropped dead of a heart attack.
“I wanted to die with him,” mom confesses. “I took some pills, but a servant found me early enough where they could take me to the hospital. They pumped my stomach, and I survived.”
“You lost the baby?” I ask even though I am convinced that is the case.
“Surprisingly, no,” mom chuckles with sadness, confusing me even more.
“The doctors told my parents I was pregnant. It didn’t go well.” I can only imagine. I never met my mother’s parents, but based on what she’s telling me now, nothing good could’ve come from there. “Jon showed up at the hospital. Told them if anything happened to his baby, they were all dead.”
“Hisbaby?” My eyes are almost popping out of my head.
“It was obviously Adam’s baby,” mom almost rolls her eyes at me in amusement. “But Jon claimed us both on the spot, didn’t even blink an eye.”
“Wow,” I breathe out as if in a trance. I don’t know what to think of any of this.
“I know,” mom chuckles, with sadness this time.
I am scared to ask my next question, but I do it anyway.
