“She is the prettiest,” Shortie tells me, completely unaware of my always filthy thoughts.
“Prettiest, you don’t say.” I rest both elbows on the table and get comfortable for this. The conversation finally got interesting.
“She is really smart, too,” Shortie continues. “She is a nurse at a big hospital in Red Lodge, Montana.”
“A nurse?” I raise my eyebrows in surprise, then look at Sully. “Where was that girl from? The one Wrecker hooked up with before he left to get the kid?”
“Montana,” Sully confirms my suspicions.
“Wasn’t she a nurse?” I ask only knowing this because Wrecker shared a bit during the long drive from Illinois. He was high on pain meds too, so it was easy to get him to talk. The fucker’s got it bad for that girl, I could tell.
“She’s a nurse,” Sully responds, now invested in this as well. He understands where I’m going with it.
“Shortie, what’s your cousin’s name again?” I think he told us, but now I’m not sure because I wasn’t really paying attention.
“Emily,” Shortie repeats the name, and now I do remember him saying it.
“Oh, never mind,” I wave him off. “This chick’s name was Becca or some shit.”
Shortie shrugs like it’s no big deal. “Emily’s best friend’s name is Rebecca.”
“Rebecca what?” I ask right away.
“Rebecca Garner, why?”
I just stare at Sully with a grin on my face. “I’ll be damned. Small world, yeah?”
“Yeah,” Sully gives me a rare grin in response, then looks at Shortie. “You wouldn’t happen to know if Emily is bringing her best friend with her, would you?”
“Oh, she is,” Shortie confirms it for us, completely oblivious as to why we’re asking, and really happy to help. “They’re coming together. That’s why my uncle needs the bodyguards for them.”
“I’ll be damned,” I chuckle. “I volunteer,” I raise my arm up like I’m in school. “I need to see what this chick looks like.”
“My cousin?” Shortie asks in surprise.
“Her, too, dude,” I wink his way.
“All this chasing girls around is gonna get you killed one day, dude,” Sully teases me, but it’s a sobering thought. I cheated death so many times since my lucky puck saved me, I’m not sure how many more times it’s going to work.
“We’re gonna need to run this by Wrecker,” I murmur, taking his attention away from me.
“Shortie,” Sully stares him down. “Get us all the information on this bodyguard business, and all the information on Utah. We’ll need to come up with a solid plan, then bring Wrecker in. If he’s not going along with this, it’s all for nothing.”
“We could still leave.” The words fly out of my mouth without me realizing it. All this talk about leaving the club has been giving me hope.
I want to be free.
I want to do whatever the fuck I want.
I want to find out exactly what happened with Kenny since Bricks didn’t share much other than he was dead.
That really is my ultimate goal.
“Hey, Puck.” Shortie calls out to me, sounding all giddy. “I got something for you. It’s a surprise.”
Nobody’s ever had a good surprise for me in my whole fuckin’ life. I was cursed at birth, I am sure of it.
“Bring it on, Shortie,” I now tell my club brother. There is no inflection in my voice. I can’t muster any enthusiasm.
