“While you are in Texas, you stay glued to both Sully and Puck, or at least one of them. At all times. Tell me you understand,” he commands.
“I understand.”
“You do whatever they tell you to do to keep you safe. Tell me you understand,” he repeats.
“You don’t think I’m safe?” I ask with one hand pressed to my chest.
“Emily,” dad’s voice is annoyed right now. “You do not go anywhere without at least one of them at your side. Do. You. Understand?”
“Yes, dad,” I rush to say.
“I need to go now. I love you.” He hangs up before I have a chance to tell him that I love him back.
I turn around and come face to face with the two virtual strangers whose sides I am not supposed to leave during my stay here.
Blake looks impassive and somewhat annoyed. He hates being on babysitting duty, I bet.
Puck on the other hand seems to be right in his element. He gives me an exaggerated wink.
“How about that drink, babe?”

Puck
Emily Stewart.
I stare after her when she walks toward her own room to leave her stuff in there. She is short, barely coming up to my shoulders, round in all the right places that matter, with eyes so blue, I could get lost in them, blonde hair that frames the sweetest face I’ve ever seen, and ass that…
“Don’t do it, brother,” Sully warns me in the corner of his mouth, but I play stupid.
“What?”
“If you fuck her, then she goes to daddy crying, you’re a dead man walking. And you know it,” he points a finger at me.
“Why would she be crying?” I grin at him. I don’t bother denying the part where he mentioned me fucking her. There is no question that will happen. I was just in the middle of writing an ode to her ass after all.
“Don’t be a dumb motherfucker,” Sully shakes his head at me in disappointment. The way he moves his head is almost making me a little nauseous. It reminds me of how Uncle Kenny used to do that after every time he screamed into my face about his brother and all the ways he hated him.
It is ironic that after surviving all that, I became best friends with a man whose first name matches my father’s. The man my mother cheated on her fiancé with. The brother of the man who pushed me into a life I didn’t want.
“Don’t wait up,” I throw over my shoulder since he and I share a room. I don’t plan on sleeping there tonight. Instead, I think I will hang out with the lovely Emily Stewart.
“Okay, I can do this,” the girl of my dreams mutters right before she turns around to face me.
“You can do what?” I tease her. “Hopefully, me.”
Emily gasps in shock and brings a hand up to her chest. The blush taking over her chest, neck and up into her face is turning me on. I want to see where else she can blush like that.
“Is that a yes?” I challenge her.
I almost jump up and down in victory when I see the resolve on her face.
“And what if it is?” Her confident voice doesn’t match the way her body is reacting.
“If it is,” I start running my finger up and down the side of her face before pushing the strands of hair off her forehead. “It will be the best news I’ve had in a while.”
“Christ,” Sully grunts behind me and stomps down the hallway in an annoyed huff.
