For one, Emily is oblivious to her father’s dealings. We were not told what she thinks he does for a living, but she definitely is not aware that it is illegal in nature.
For two, the club seems to have had some business with him back when Bricks became a member. That was a long time ago, before he became a president of the club.
Things changed over the years, and, little by little, we lost most of the runs related to the business Devereaux was sending our way.
And finally, for three, we know with certainty that Devereaux is our only hope to get out of the club. He hates Bricks and wants him dead. We have no idea why, and we have to trust him. Blindly.
“We either do that, or we’re dead,” Wrecker declared.
“But we might be dead either way,” I argued. “Is this the only way?”
“Shortie has our back,” both him and Sully assured me. But I felt that Shortie had been acting weird as fuck lately. Jumpy as hell.
At the same time, we all are. I am scared of my own shadow, and every time Bricks looks at me, I think I’d have a stroke.
It’s really ironic that I am about to take out the man who saved me all those years ago. But, did he really save me? His clear vote had been for a bullet to my head. Wrecker is the one who vouched for me. My loyalty is to him.
“I have a cousin who lives somewhere in Texas,” Emily informs me out of the blue.
“Yeah?”
“Yes, his name is David. I haven’t seen him in years. He was always nice. Kind of weird,” she chuckles.
Fuck, she doesn’t know the half of it.
“I wonder where he lives.”
That’s all we need now, for Emily to somehow end up in the middle of the cluster the rest of us are.
“Are you sure Becca is okay?” She switches gears on me again.
“She is, babe,” I assure her. “Wreck’s taking good care of her, I promise.”
I’m sure all the care is sexual in nature, but I don’t want to get into that.
“We should all have breakfast in the morning,” she pops her head up to look at me. “Before I go to meet with the attorney.
“I was kind of hoping to have you to myself tomorrow morning.” I kiss her gently on the nose when I tell her that, and she just melts in my arms, Becca all forgotten.
“I’d love that.”

Emily
“Em,”a deep voice calls out to me. “You need to wake up, babe. You’re gonna be late for your appointment.”
I stretch my entire body in contentment, and the only way to describe the sounds coming out of me is by saying that I’m purring like a cat out in the sunshine.
“Puck,” I moan into my pillow, then yelp when his teeth sink into my right buttock.
“Wake up, girl,” he repeats. “You’re gonna make us late.”
I smile at the way he says that, like we’re a couple, and this is something we need to do together. Unfortunately, my smile dies down as fast as it came.
He is just someone my father hired for security. And I am in Texas only to settle my mother’s estate.
We are not a couple…
