I smile back at him. “A good word for what?” Do I sound flirty? I think I sound flirty.

“I’d like to take her out,” he finally confesses. “She is never alone when I see her, and I don’t want to be a creep and get her phone number from her file at the hospital. So I thought I’d go through proper channels of communication.”

“That’s me,” I grin and point at my head.

“Indeed it is,” Dr. Nolan agrees. “So will you?”

“I’d love to, Dr. Nolan.”

Feeling light as a feather now that I know what he’s up to, I stand up. He, like the gentleman he always seems to be, follows suit, and we both walk back inside.

“Give me a couple of days,” I tell him before we split, with me going in the opposite direction of where his office is.

“You got it,” he winks and walks away.

I turn around to go back to my floor. I am almost there, when my cell phone buzzes with a message.

Unknown: you can’t just block every number I try contacting you from

I have no idea who this is. I’ve been getting messages from random numbers that I just ignored, which is what I’m about to do with this message here.

“I had a feeling you would do that.”

I lift my head in surprise and come face to face with Steve.

“What are you doing here?” I look around us, but he seems to be alone. That means he is here to see me and not because he brought someone in.

“I’ve been trying to talk to you for months now, Emily. This is ridiculous,” he chastises me like I’m a little kid.

I just shrug and stick my hands in the pockets of my uniform. “Maybe you should’ve taken the hint then, Steve.”

“Same could be said about you, Emily,” he deadpans. “The fact that I am not giving up doesn’t mean anything to you?”

“Not really,” I admit. It seems like he came out of the woodwork couple of months after I returned from Texas. That means we had almost three months with zero communication from the time I caught him sexing his lovely assistant on his desk at work until months later.

“We were together for two years, Emily,” he reminds me passionately. “We were good together, were we not?”

“Eh,” I bring a hand out of my pocket and move it side to side. “Not that good since you had to stick your dick in someone else.”

“Emily,” he sounds positively disgusted. “Since when do you speak like that?”

“Like what?” I know exactly what he means but love making him say it.

“This is not who you are, Emily.” It’s like he’s trying to shame me now. I don’t think so.

“Well, Steve,” I smile at him, “ever since I started getting some really decent dick, I realized that yours didn’t do shit for me.”

The shock on his face is something for the history books. I want to laugh so badly, but that would just ruin this whole thing.

“You’re sleeping with someone else?” And that’s all he got out of what I just said? Apparently, he does not care that his dick is useless, to me at least.

“How else would I know that you don’t do it for me, Steve? Besides, you already know all about it, right? You brought it up when I called you.” I sound bitchy and condescending, and I am loving every second of it.

Steve doesn’t say anything for the longest time. He just stares at me, and I see the exact moment when his gaze on me turns from disbelief to calculating. The evil I see in his eyes almost takes my breath away.

“You are going to regret saying any of this to me, Emily.”

“Is that so?” My heart is beating so fast, I am lightheaded, and I’d really prefer not to pass out in front of this jerk.
