“Shit,” I mumble as I rush to the door. I grab my keys and call out a goodbye to Sully. He is sitting at the kitchen table texting. Once this thing with Bricks is done, I’m gonna hack into his phone and see who he’s talking to. I need to know.
I get on my bike and haul ass to the hospital where Emily works. She is not supposed to leave unless me, Malone or Sully are there to pick her up. She is smart and understands the urgency of our request, especially after all she’s been through. Steve has not shown up since that day at the hospital, but that doesn’t mean anything.
I finally pull into the hospital parking lot, making my way toward the door where Emily usually exits from. I let a cuss out under my breath when I see that she is standing outside, with Becca out of all people, the one person in this entire mess that we know for sure has a target on her back.
As I get closer, I see Becca and Emily looking at me nervously. I decide to play it cool for whoever might be watching us right now.
“Em, you ready to go, babe?”
I then turn my eyes to Dylan’s woman. She is just standing there like a deer in the headlights.
“Hey, lovely Becca,” I call out to her in a teasing tone. “Long time no see, yeah? What’s shakin’?”
The smile she gives me in return looks constipated to say the least. She doesn’t want to be here talking to me. I guess she hates me by association since her man is my friend, and they seem to be on the outs again.
The sliding door behind the girls glide open with a gentle whooshing sound, and out comes the guy Becca showed up at Devereaux party with. Some doctor, if memory serves me correctly.
He heads straight for Becca, making my eyebrows go up over my sunglasses and into my hairline.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t with you at your appointment,” he rushes to say, then pulls her into a tight hug. Dylan is going to go into wrecking mode when he hears about this. Because I have no intention to keep it away from him.
I about fall off my bike when I hear his next words.
“I really wanted to see the baby.”
What. The. Fuck.
“Puck, we need to go,” Emily pats me on the shoulder, then gets behind me on the back. I’m just staring at Becca who is looking back at me with a guilty look on her face. I cannot believe that Dylan knows about this and not burning the world to the ground. Unless I got it all wrong and he is not in love with her like I thought?
“Puck,” Emily calls out to me again. “Let’s go. Leave them alone.”
Since I never turned my bike off from before, I just rev the engine a couple of times, then take off as fast as I can. We make it back to the house in record time.
As soon as we pull in, I see that Dylan is home. But so are a bunch of other people whose cars I don’t recognize.
When we walk into the house, we run into Malone.
“You’re late,” he grumbles at me. “Boss has the family over.”
A look behind him confirms that Devereaux is here. I also see Arlene back there, holding a baby, which can only mean that…
“Wyatt is here?” Emily gasps from behind me.
“He is,” Malone confirms.
“Oh my god,” she shakes her hands with nervousness. “I need to go wash up and change really quick.”
I look her up and down, unsure of what she’s talking about, but decide that she does need time to process what’s about to happen, even if it is only for a few minutes.
“Do you need me to come up with you?”
“No,” she rushes to say. “Cover for me, okay?” She lifts herself on the tip of her toes to kiss me on the cheek, then takes off in a run toward the second floor where the bedrooms are located.
I rush outside to talk to Dylan, but Devereaux stops me right as I am about to get out the door.
“We need to tell him about Bricks,” he speaks low into my ear. “Can’t drag it out anymore.” His eyes sweep the yard with concern. Everyone looks happy and with no worries in the world. We’re about to fix that.
I slide the back door open and march right up to him.
